My bank disaster story.

large banks are the enemy. Go with a small bank or a credit union.

My bank just informed me that my debit card info was stolen and they issued me a new card-however, they forgot to transfer my reward points to the new card (had over 26,000 in earnings to be redeemed.) Now they are scrambling trying to "upload" them back to people's accounts...they better.

how does your bank know if your debit card was stolen if you don't? surely you would have seen the purchase history and informed them, right?

Agreed, but notice that the inconvenience is always on the customer. Funny how that happens

You will have less trouble if you open an account where your employer banks. Then all direct deposits are inter-bank and instant.

Often the merchant will let them know if they lose a laptop with 20,000 credit card numbers.

Funny story, wifey lost our common credit cards so I had to cancel the cards. This shut off my online banking, so I couldn't monitor my own account for fraud. Go team!

This happened to me as well. American Express called me out of the blue and said my card was compromised, with charges coming from Brazil! This happened before I usually review my statement. I didn't have to lift a finger. They cancelled my old card, removed around $4K in charges, and issued me a new card.

Hope it's not PNC....

^Nope, MasterCard had a security breach, and my number was on of the "section of numbers" that was confiscated. Hence the issuance of a new card/number

Same here. I will never deal with Chase anything again( car loan, credit card, bank account, etc... ). They are absolutely AWFUL!

I can't easily switch banks right now as I have checks out as well as checks that bounced. The bank is covering all those fees. The bank lady called me yesterday morning to tell me that my accounts were back up. Later she called to tell me that my direct deposits went in.

It looks like she got things fixed....after 2 weeks

This is why I don't deal with big banks. If I have a problem with my bank I walk across the street to their HQ and talk to the VP about it.

Chase and Bank of America are scum bags as far as I'm concerned.

Thats one of the reasons I don't have a debit card, seems a little too easy to get the account cleaned out in my opinion.

With a credit cards there is limit to the amount of fraudulent charges you're on the hook for, no such protections exist for debit card I understand.

your account is FDIC insured for $250K. All is okay. It is a credit card of sorts. It is not like they would have my card and PIN and be able to get cash at an ATM.

5/3 is terrible. I had an account with them for a while. They were conveniently located for me, but the checking account I had required a ridiculous minimum balance requirement to avoid fees even though I wasn't getting interest. When I finally had enough and closed the account, the teller didn't actually *close* it, she did a complete withdrawal, noted on the bank check that it was to close the account, but left it open. So a few weeks later I start getting daily robocalls about my account, triggered by them trying to take $12.50 out to cover the fees on a zero balance. That took them 2 months to finally straighten out.

Chase, so far, has done right by me. I had a thing against them ever since they took over Bank One and made a mess of my accounts there, but I finally gave in and opened a checking account with them due to an arrangement my employer has with them. So far, no surprises, they're even more convenient than 5/3 was as far as locations, and they even cut me some slack last summer. The only requirement I have on this account is a certain dollar amount of direct deposits occurring each month, and due to me taking 3 months off of work over the summer for FMLA purposes with my Mom, I didn't have a paycheck coming in and didn't meet the DD requirement for the last month once the payroll cycle paid me for the time I did work and then chewed up my vacation time. The fee hit me the last weekend before I went back to work (talk about timing), so I went in to the branch with my FMLA paperwork and asked if it was possible to reverse the fee in this one instance. 5 minutes later I walked out with a credit on my account for the fee.

Now TCF Bank...don't get me started there. All I will say is that I get the vibe that my business there would be more valued if English wasn't my primary language.

glad the OP got this mess worked out. sad to see the hoops you had to jump though to get things fixed, especially when it was not your fault. funny this topic came up as my Dad the other day told me a story about his best friend. the guy had a almost all of his money in a large safe in his house, he did not trust banks.my Dad said you would not believe how much money was in that safe!

FDIC insurance offers no protection for fraudulant charges. All is not OK. The FDIC is not going to step in if someone cleans out your account. FDIC insurance is for a bank failure type event.
