Mustang vs GTO

Which would you guys chose? 2 popular magazines I recieve both picked the Mustang for a performance/price standpoint. Looks too. Only thing that would hold me back from buying the Ford is that LS2 engine now in the GTO. Tough choice.

It's a tough decision, because the GTO has my engine in it, the LS1, but the new 2005 Mustang looks so hot! Everytime I see one I applaud Ford for bringing back an old design but giving it the modern touch. It just needs more power (a lot more!)

Patman ,There is never enough power.

With the ls2 and 400 hp paired with the t56 transmission, Ill take the gto anyday over the ford. I like fords, but Im partial to gtos(dad had a 67 blue 400 cu in engine w/4speed manual)!!!!!!

I would go with the GTO. F#@d is the only 4 letter word not allowed to be said in my house or be parked in my driveway. You may think about holding off. Honestly, from what I heard about the first new GTO's I was not impressed. They used the chassis from a GM car made in Australia. The first year GTO seemed to be put together too fast to have a complete design from ground up. Not sure about ones being produced now. I hear the Camaro (without the Firebird) is coming back in 2007. Anyone heard anything about it.

Fords are not bad anymore. I think so many people have had bad experience with certain brands that they have been negatively affected for life. Look at Hyundai, they now lead in quality and have made incredible improvements. Up to 900%!

All cars are good today for the most part. (Still very skeptical of Dodge and certain GM cars) And in fact, the reviews are specifically stating that the Mustang is made well and feels solid. I think it's an excellent car with an engine that has been out for awhile and is proven.

My family has had great luck with Ford trucks. They have been reliable for the most part. They might not hit 300k without a major repari like a Toyota, but no one in my family wants to keep a car that long either! All depends on what you want. For $25k, it's tough to beat.

Id get a GTO. The ford looks better on the outside, sure. But the GTO looks way better on the inside and has nicer stuff standard. However the gaspedal has the firewall next to it and I kept kicking the firewall. Plus the shifter is like a **** rowboat. I guess a short shifter would fix that though. The GTO can be had for $25000 with the 6 speed and 400hp. And I can use my GM card rebate on a GTO. Id get a GTO. In fact, I might consider it in a few years if they are still made and retro camaros arent out yet.

the mustang just looks hot. the gto isn't really a gto, it's just another bland gm with rwd and a big engine. i know the goat would probably whup the stang in many performance measures, but the mustang looks so much better.

now, if you throw in the chrysler crossfire, it's no contest in any way, shape, or form.

i figure if you're going to put up with one of these 'merkun hot rods, it might as well look good.

Have you sat in a crossfire? Its like sitting on the floor with your legs straight out. Crap, if you ask me. My point is that you do most of the sitting inside the car. I place more emphasis on what Im looking at (the inside) rather than what the neighbor gets to look at. In this case it will be my exhaust as I do burnouts in front of his house.

Ford Retro Mustang...mmmmmmmm....love the look.

Aussie Holden Monaro (GTO) ....mmmm 6.0L engine...mmmm...Independent Rear Suspension.

So I guess I will save up and trade in for either car next.

No C6 Vette until medical school is long over or I hit the lotto...although the latter is unpropable

Like others have said, the GTO isn't really a GTO and in my personal opinion looks like any other car on the road. Was that a new GTO or that G6 thing or a Grand Prix, or a Mitsubishi? It jsut doesn't stand out at all. I think Pontiac/GM gave the car an identity crisis. From what I've seen read the only thing about the car that impresses me is the interior.

The Mustang however, is instantly recognized. admitted, I'm biased toward Mustangs but I also love(d) GOATS and other classics. The new stang will stay with the GTO and turn heads everywhere it goes. Plus just think of what you can do with the 4 grand left over from not buying the GTO....I'm thinking some forced induction

.

Patman....I wouldn't say the new stang needs a lot more power? What's the difference in a 1/4 mile between the the two cars... .two tenths of a second? Don't get me wrong that GTO(Vette) motor is a beast for sure but a 1400cc smaller motor with 300hp, 325 ft .lb of torque is no slouch. Price wise they aren't even close...you'd have to wait for the '06 SVT Cobra to make a more even comparo in dollars and cents and that of course is where the power parity factor will be.

For anyone who does not like the GTO, all I can say is, Drive it...

I agree that the new GTO is no classic GTO. It makes a classic GTO look like a POS in comparison. The only thing the old GTOs have on the new one are looks. The handling, stopping, and acceleration are all far ahead of the old ones and the interior is one of the best GM interiors ever. I'm hoping the resale on them is horrible, and I'll be able to afford a 2004 in a cople of years.

As far as Mustang vs GTO, I don't consider them to be in the same class. The GTO will seat 4 adults comfortably. The Mustang isn't comfortable, to me, by myself.

Autoweek and all the other magazines must have the crappiest drivers out there doing these 1/4 mile tests! I've actually seen alot of these GTO's run at the track this fall and summer. I've seen a 13.2 @ 105 mph out of a bone stock
2004 GTO 6 speed. I checked the car out too as we were side by side in the pits. This was the 350HP LS1 model also. With a decent driver the new 05 GTO is a high 12 ET car that should trap 106-109 mph. With a set of drag radials high to mid 12's are assured as they are hard to launch with the IRS. As for the 05 Mustang.... The front and sides are growing on me slowly but the rear is still one UGLY POS!! Also when it comes to modability the LS2 is far ahead of the 4.6L. When LS2 Edit and other tuning software is available there will be endless possibilites for the LS2's. They allready have the higher flowing LS6 style heads so a medium size cam along with supporting bolt ons should take them well over 400rwhp. I've allready seen a few Heads @ Cam LS1 GTO's at 415-425rwhp levels. When they are both bone stock the GT is somewhat close to the GTO but as mods begin it falls behind quickly in the rearview mirror.

Car and Driver's comparo in the Jan 05 issue tested the 05 Goat vs. 05 Pony. Pony wins. The Goat had more power and was slightly faster but it lost due to inability to "heel-to-toe" driving, then a "high-effort shifter", it's styling and price tag. Note, it is not faster through the lane change test and does not hold the road as good as the solid axle Mustang. The Mustang won by one point.

Easy choice for me. The Mustang. But I already plan on having one in 2 years. That'll give Ford a chance to finish it and me a chance to live without a payment book for a little while. I still haven't gotten the last one empty...
