Musk Says Tesla ‘Dug Our Own Grave’ With The Cybertruck

Article in todays WSJ says that Tesla is having a big problem with the choice of ultra-hard stainless steel.

"...
The stainless steel, which is being used for the truck’s outer shell, has proven challenging to bend and manipulate, testing Tesla’s ability to shape the material into body panels that line up correctly and don’t result in large gaps when installed, according to people who have worked on the pickup.

On top of that, it is so hard and strong that it can be difficult to flatten, these people said. The metal is produced in coils that resemble giant rolls of toilet paper, and even when unrolled, it has a tendency to spring back into its earlier, curved form. ...:"

Basically it's too hard to manipulate using typical stamping machines.

There's a reason only one other production car used a stainless steel body, and it was a failure.

Beautiful trucks. Reminiscent of the warthog from halo. You old timers wouldn’t understand…if I had the dough I’d buy this in a heartbeat.

We old timers wouldn’t get that you secretly want to be the Master Chief? I’m not sure that’s a good reason to buy a truck, and it doesn’t come with Cortana, but I suppose you could take it to Comic-Con…

Elon has created the first usable electric car, first usable self driving technology, the first and only profitable private space company, commercialized satellite internet, prevented nuclear war with Russia and China, changed the way we use X, protected free speech and is developing neural implants that will change the way we live and work. Where others fail he succeeds. I am sure he can figure out stainless steel. I am surprised by his pessimism about the cybertruck.

There's just not much that makes sense about this truck. Instead of making a design that assists the manufacturing process, it was promise something ridiculous and try to make it work. That's somewhat fine for something low production, but this isn't exactly a good idea for mass production.

I'm not surprised by his pessimism. He ran his mouth as usual and this time he's not been able to cash the checks that cover it. It may be one of the first times he's truly understood that he's the one that wedges himself in the corner.

The actual first shipments to consumers is imminent. (Maybe)
How about we wait a month or so to see how the actual production models look and what the owners think of them before passing judgement.

Second guessing whether or not the Cybertruck "makes sense" and whether the design is more difficult to manufacture given Tesla's unique and innovative production techniques and methods is a fool's errand.

We'll know soon enough and the speculation can end.

I mean, have you watched the Twitter debacle play out? How about the "pedo guy" comment? All this guy does is run his mouth and get himself into trouble. He might employ geniuses but Musk himself is nothing but an entitled rich kid playing with everyone else's money.

I've always thought the same. He may have some great ideas but no ability to filter and say only those things.

The "other" stainless steel production car failed for a lot of reasons, by far most of which had nothing to do with the stainless steel body.

One thing is for sure. All of us with black cars should be able to find some solace, in knowing that there will now be at least one other exterior car finish, that is more difficult to keep looking nice.

Wait til about 5-8 years old… after the initial “gotta have it” factor has faded, and before all the crusties think their 175HP ‘86 Monte Carlo SS is worth 30 grand because they kept it under a cover for 40 years…
They were actually 180hp 🤣. I get your point, just messing with you. I am glad I passed on buying an SS back in 87 and instead got my 87 Buick GN that I still have today (in amazing original condition and low miles)...the Turbo Regals do pull 30k+
