I was looking on the Royal Purple site for their ATF and found this:

What product do you recommend for manual transmissions / transfer cases that specify a Ford Mercon® and / or GM Dexron® fluid?

For manual transmissions and / or transfer cases specifying a Ford Mercon® or GM Dexron® type ATF, Royal Purple recommends either its Max ATF or for greater performance, its Synchromax.

I'm currently running Amsoil MTF in my manual tranny. I was wondering if this might be a good alternative for my Jeeps TC which specs ATF +4?

Any ideas?

I have the syncromax in my 92 TC. It's the same viscosity as an ATF (around 7.5cST) with gear oil protection. I give it the thumbs up. It's a GL-4 too, which gives me a little piece of mind because I have the manual tranny.

I have over 60k on RP Synchromax in my 2500's transfercase...improved shifting by a lot...always drains clear.

While I had horrible results with synchromax in my NV5600, my transfercase likes it...

we've always used 75W-90 in our Nissan Patrol's t/case which specs either Dex II ATF or 75W-90. I'd use the GL4 MTF gear oil in your Jeep.

Yeah, in the Jeep (and pretty much any newer chain driven tcase), running too thick a fluid will cause the oil pump to shear off and starve the bearings for oil...you can imagine the results...

I've recommended MTFs for x-case usage for years. And, MTF usually works better then ATF in manual transmissions.

RP makes the thinnest MTF. Synchromax is perfect for ATF substitution in xcases, manuals, and even as a PSF. But it might be a little thin for 30wt and synchromesh trannies. This is where Redline MTL, Amsoil MTF,.... reign supreme. They are a little thicker then ATF but shouldn't cause problems that some foresee by jumping too thick to an 85wt or 90wt.

A little thicker might be better if you have a known weak or worked x-case or transmission requiring ATF. IMO, even Synchromesh(texaco or pennzoil) is better in gearboxes requiring normal ATF like Dex/Mer/ATF+.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I have ~.5 quart of the Amsoil MTF left over from the trans. I think I'll add that to the TC first, and then top the rest off with some Amsoil ATF. Capacity is ~1.5 quarts.

Any reason not too?

as I stated, Nissan spec either/or in that particular chain drive t/case. I wasn't advocating he use a 75w-90, I suggested MTF. A dedicated manual trans/gear fluid provides better gear/bearing protection than any ATF.
