A decade or so ago I thought about moving to Atlanta. But after living and working there for half a year, the casual racism was just too much. It was embarrassing for me when with my darker skinned friends, I would sometimes be the only one acknowledged or spoken to.

would it grease your joints if i told you i don't watch much tv (beside kids PBS/NIck/Disney educational shows, since kids have the control) and don't listen much Radio...

That's the plan, maybe rent for 1/2-1 year to try the neighborhood.
had friends move there 4-5 years ago.
the general answer is the same money buys more there.

Your More then welcome , I have a few years left before I get my kids out of college and GA does look apealing to me as I ride motorcycles and the season is about 10 months out of the year

if you go get ready for your first snow fall it is the funnyest thing you being from chicago , watching the good folks of GA drive in snow , I laughed my ( *#$ ) off watching that happen the first time i was there and it snowed 2 inches they shut EVERYTHING down for 3 days

yep, i plan to at least have good all-seasons on....
and i know how to open a garage door manually (had to help a neighboor at my condo, hehe)
how is the freestyle treating you? not a lot of people bought those, but who keep them are proud of them (low ride, lots of space, very capable)

As I mentioned, I grew up in the metro Atlanta area and moved in the 80's to Charlotte, moved outside Charlotte in the late 90's to escape the poor performing schools and taxes, I think Greenville SC is a great place, very large international community due to BMW and Michelin, I also think Charlotte and Raleigh are good choices, Nashville is a neat town as well, I would visit each and let the wife decide,

remember, i want next to a big city, not into a big city...
safe and good schools for kids, a little warmer than IL, less taxes, and not FL hot in summer...

Nope, that was Columbia, Greenville is an hour to the mountains and 3 hours to the beach, Charlotte and Raleigh a little further

Meh... we looked into moving there a couple of years ago. We even did some house hunting to get an idea of what we could expect. We were living in suburbs of Chicago at the time. We came to a conclusion that a nice house in a good area/suburb of ATL that's relatively close to MARTA is going to cost you just as much as a nice house in a good area suburb of Chicago. And if you have to commute to downtown ATL for work, it's a nightmare, unless you can utilize MARTA.

What does suck about Chicago area is high property taxes though. I think Atlanta is slightly better in that regard.

Personally, I'd look into Raleigh-Durham, NC area instead.
