Movie Theaters Too Loud?

I don't remember the last time I was in a movie theater. But I know I used earplugs, as I've always carried them with me ever since I got my M/C license at 16.

You're missing out if you think the old theaters are better than modern ones. Reclining seats, cocktails, Dolby surround sound.... Awesome.

Sir you have missed out. I have to disagree theaters are better than ever ancient theaters from the 30's are cold and the audio is dreadful then there is the musty smell and little seats.

I was telling my god daughter that there used to be ashtrays built into the arm rests. Some old theatres certainly were beautiful, but seating has improved, I would think (I haven't been to a theatre in about a decade either), and the technology must have gotten better. There was a lot of beauty in the really old theatres, but I don't want to be sitting in a smoke house, either. Rose tinted glasses....

Of course, on the other side, home theatre technology is pretty wonderful these days, and it's hard to convince me to spend a bunch of money on a ticket and concessions for the privilege of sitting in front of someone who kicks the seat and beside a whiny kid.

If you haven't been to a theater in decades, how would you know they're a joke in comparison?

What's so bad about them?

I prefer not to waste my money going to a theater. The movies are released very quickly after the theater runs. I have a large enough screen, a decent sound bar and a comfortable couch. No noises, no rude people, no chances of getting involved in something worse.

Anyone notice that new theaters are not opening up like before? In fact, several in my area are shut down. Attendance is dropping.

A lot has changed since I was a teen waiting in a line that stretched for 2-3 blocks downtown to see Tommy with a bunch of friends. The movie was in its 16th week and the place was packed. Just over 2000 seats in that theater. The Who were in their prime.

I'm 31 yrs old and I'm already using subtitles on Netflix because I can't hear the dialogue properly. I find the background noise in TV way too loud and dialogue too soft. I did see a movie a couple weeks ago and I had no problem hearing. So I'd imagine it was probably very loud. I hadn't been to movie in quite some time. This theatre had Lay-Z-Boy recliners. Didn't want to get out of the chair after the movie!

I started going back to theaters a couple years ago and noticed the volume was really up. I asked the manager and he said it was to discourage people from talking on their cell phones during the movie. Whether true or not, I did notice that no one was chatting away on their phone. I did appreciate that! FWIW.

The last movie we saw at the theater was, "Open Range". And yes, it was far too loud back then. We never went again as a result. I'm totally deaf in my left ear from childhood, and have only about 75% hearing in my right ear. And even I found the volume to be excessive. What is even worse are the high and low volume variations from the background music to the dialogue. The music blasts you out of your seat, while you can barely hear much of the conversation.

It's not just movie theaters doing this either. There is a good show on the Science Channel called, "Factory Made", and another called, "How It's Made". Both showcase how many different products are manufactured. On many episodes they all but completely drown out the narration with noisy heavy metal background music. It is so annoying to listen to, the program becomes all but unwatchable.

Blu-Ray is still a thing in Canada? It went the way of the Beta Max video here...

What are we using here ???

I'm not up with it at all I think...

I saw the last Star Wars offshoot in a new theater with Atmos sound and it was way too quiet. Disappointing.

I've upped my home theater over the last couple years to a 5.2.4 Atmos system with Klipsch Reference Premier speakers so I know what reference loudness should be. 105dB for mains and 115dB for the LFE channel. I don't listen at reference level much but when the right opportunity shows itself, it's amazing. FWIW, safe levels for long term exposure set by OSHA is 85dB. 105dB has 100 times more sound energy!

I just bought an OLED during the last flash sale by LG so I see no reason to visit a theater.

Are you using your TV's built in speakers? If so they suck.

Get a decent sound bar or surround sound system, doesn't have to be real expensive.

Yep, you can buy them anywhere as well as DVD's. You can play DVD's on the Blu-Ray player. Blu-Ray Ultras are available now as well. When my current Blu-Ray player dies, I will be getting a Blu-Ray Ultra player.
