Oop! Sorry, this should go in the "Humor Section". This movie is a real piece of crap. For those who have not seen it, a very poorly made docu-drama on what would happen to the US, if we lost Middle East oil for a year. Looks like it was made by a bunch of un-informed high schoolers. Lots of weird stuff in it, like farmers protesting our use of oil with signs that say "Food, Not Oil'.

Anyhow, it is playing on FX channel this week, if you have an hour or so to waste.

"What do you think would happen to the US if we lost Middle East oil for a year? "
----------------------------------------------------------

You could pretty much expect a depression. We wouldn't lose middle east oil but oil prices would go through the roof as the cartel of OPEC and it's Western Hemisphere partners would still supply North America.

The Canadians would be vital to U.S. security.

In the movie, one of the major refineries was taken out by Arab terrorists, which didn't make sense, but taking out this refinery cut production to the US by 1/3. This drove the price of gas into the $8 a gallon range.

Hmmmmm.......

Oil supplies reduced. Would Venezuela and other suppliers make up part of the difference?

Even ifthey didn't.... consider the amount of wasted fuel.

Let the price rise to encourage conservation. Thermostats lowered in winter. More car pooling. Fewer off-the-cuff trips to the store, etc.

Sure, the bleating sheep that make up the majority of the US population (I get the feeling from reading posts hereabouts that not many bleating sheep involve themslves with this BBS) will be inconvenienced but, so be it!!!!!!!

Suppose gasoline reached $8 per gallon. A darn good reason for several folks to use one vehicle (likely the one with the pick-up or van) to do their grocery shopping together. Another "hmmmmmmm," it may be the one with the gas guzzler in the best position if gas prices soar. That guzzler may have the carrying capacity to convey several folks and their foodstuffs on a combined shopping expedition.

The government, if it believed the trend was to stay with low oil supplies, could combat some of the ill effects by implementing a nation-wide mass transit movement. The current roads proved excellent bases for rail-based transit. Cover the land with electric-powered mass transt. Doing so would put a lot of folks to work. Then, get hopping on building a few more nuclear-based electricity generating plants to supply that mass transit.

As long as monied vested interests, their political lackeys, and other anti-social self-centered bureaucrats et al are kept out of the picture I believe the country could overcome any loss of mid-east oil.

Would be kinda' nice to thumb our communal noses at Ali Baba and his 40 mullahs.

Neener neener neener..... you can eat your oil.

the problem with your Hmmmm is that pickups and such are lousy in single vehicle scenarios. Want to verify? Go to Europe where fuel is already 3-4x what it is here. Guess what? pickups are as rare as hen's teeth. In actuality pickups are about as INefficient as they come. there, people that really NEED a truck drive a real truck.

Efficiency? station wagons, minivans rule.

but, yes, if we can keep the govenment from piddling with the basic supply-demand rules and let the market work, we'll come thru it just fine. Nowhere in the constitution is there a "right to drive" law. Live with it.

"I'm from the government and I'm here to help..."

Best thing to do would be stop watching T.V. and listening to all the garbage the media puts out, pure filth/lies/filth/crap/nonsense/lies/filth...

Rant off.
