To be honest, if you have the money and time to spare, I'd be interested in seeing how long that motor would last and if it can be done for less than $15k. I think that many HD riders would like to see if it could be done and would log in to a website that shows the project in it's various stages.

If you're are any kind of gearhead, you have to at least want to see if it can be done. Now, I'm not talking about an Evolution engine, but a Twin Cam from HD.

You sure would have bragging rights -- that's for sure. Maybe even Cycle World would feature your project?

Go for it !!

The 124" engine I have is an S&S so that would not meet the requirements, although it is substantially the same design. It puts out about 145HP, a supercharger can easily add enough to get to 200 w/o nitrous. That would be about $12,000 between engine, charger, tuning. Then a clutch upgrade, chain drive, and gearing changes, another $1500. Or I could use a JIMS 120". But for a true Harley motor I'd have to start at a 110" and it would be a little harder and may need a lot of boost or the addition of nitrous. Regardless, I still don't see why the motor would instantly grenade, if built properly. Harley lower ends are extremely tough if set-up correctly and all engine clearences can be blue-printed and set-up for high output. I'm not the first to think about this, there are a couple blower bikes making over 150HP already - one is just short of 200, w/o nitrous and with only 95" displacement: http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/hplist_twin_cam.htm
They lasted long enough to get several dyno pulls. Do you think street riding would be harder on the motor that a full-out dyno run?

Someday I may take up the challenge but since I just bought a Buell, my wife will KILL me if I start dumping thousands into the RK. Especially since I currently have plans for the Sportster, stage 5 99" engine with .600 lift cams.

Are you thinking of putting that S&S engine in the RK or have you already done that? I've been watching the remaining Buells and if they get discounted much, I may grab one.

If you are truly interested in a Buell, some of them have beautiful liquid cooled, Austrian built, Rotax 146 h.p. engines in them. Much better option than the HD power plant.

I don't think I'll ever understand why the "anti-HD guys"
are so hateful about it.

Harley guys tend to do more of their own maintenence and
engine work than those loyal to other brands.

Harleys are infinitely easier to work on than most other
brands. Not only are most of the parts available at
your local HD dealers which are everywhere, but there
are literally hundreds of aftermarket suppliers too...
I just wish I could get my local Honda shop to stock
my tires and air cleaners without having to wait three
days.

Harley almost intentionally underengineers their
engines knowing that about half will do a performance
build to some degree. Many just add pipes and
an air cleaner, but about 1 in 5 are seriously built
bad mamma-jamma torque factories on two wheels...
don't be fooled....and they are a hoot to ride.

It is so easy and cheap to almost double the HP and Torque
from a stock twinn cam 88 motor...just for fun in your
garage....I wouldn't even think about taking the engine
out of my Goldwing!...let alone in my garage. I can tell
you first hand that my Road King will just flat out
eat my Goldwings lunch to 100 MPH.

Why do so many do it? Simple, if you've never dropped the
clutch of a HD with 110 lbs/ft of torque at 1800 rpm
and felt it jump straight forward 30 feet without a
hick-up, you haven't lived...gives me wood everytime.

It's a direct result of years of exposure to HD guys.

To each his own. We choose with our dollar.

I'll take my 15000 rpm sake sucker any day. 10.60 at 140+ over and over.

Watching those Harley's at the traffic lights with all their parts just a rattlin' sure doesn't do anything for me.

They're not hateful about the bikes as much as the riders. They (not me anymore) think they look/act like clowns.

One has to question if Buell's choice of a better, more performance oriented engine such as the Rotax, is a reason why HD shut them down?

I wouldn't put it past HD, too much competition from Buell/Rotax

The S&S was for a FatBoy but hasn't been installed yet. It just sits in the corner waiting to be let loose on the world. I'd actually love to put it into a Dyna Sport with some nice ~.650 cams and a good exhaust. I think it could make 150HP/140TQ at the tire with the right combination. On a 600lb bike, that would seriously move out.

I got the Buell new for about $5,700+TTL+set-up+freight. MSRP was $11,995. I know of a dealer that should have a few left if you are interested. The 2010's will be more like $7K+TTLSF but the same dealer may still have some of those also. They also were getting some factory demo's and selling them for about $500-$1000 less.

Against which Harley model(s)? The V-rod is not the same type of bike and neither is the Sportster. I don't know what catagory the V-Rod is, maybe Sport-Cruiser? Muscle-Cruiser? And the Sportster is more of a Standard or Sporty-Standard? While the Buells are definitely more of a "C-Rocket" or "Sport"

PM sent.

The dates are official. I will be at the Osceola, IN drag strip the last weekend of June 2010. My invitation to Grampi is still wide open, no pun intended.

I see no point wasting my time racing a $40K V-Rod, unless you're interested in running a more fair race and ZGRider is willing to let me barrow his ZX-14.....

Right now, we have two Hondas, two Harleys and two Indians. Having owned more that 45 street bikes, I think I can say that I never met a bike that I didn't like.

However, if you guys want to race, then (help me out here JonFromCB) we can have a friendly little race out to the West coast, then to the East Coast (and back).

ME? I'll be taking this one. I'll even bring the old lady.
