Here are a few photos of the FL820 I ran on my 04 Mustang GT 4.6L with 153k miles, for 16 months and 7,094 miles, while running SuperTech 5W20 full synthetic high mileage. I'm now running Valvoline Restore and Protect and a ST2 filter. I may change the filter sooner than later as timing chain rattle on startup has been occurring more often since the change.

There were some indents in the silicone adbv from the openings and one was starting to tear but was not torn through to the other side yet. The media was not torn except where I accidentally indented the can while cutting it open.

I'm sorry that it wasn't the cleanest media removal:

That’s a little too long/old-I would keep it to a year, maybe 5-6K. Unfortunately the FL820S isn’t tough enough to go longer. The ST2 doesn’t have a silicone ADBV, so drain back with nitrile is going to be worse than a silicone one. I’ve been running OG XG2s on mine, but I still won’t go much past a year.

Whoa, 16 months/~7.1k miles on an 820S, some might say, thrill seeking... or worse. :D Based on previous post use anecdotes, if filter choice, pushed well past what would generally be advised. All that said, looks like this one survived to get the job done. As noted, the 820S the least recommended Motorcraft filter application.

Thanks for c&p.

As mentioned these filters almost always look bad. I stopped using them. 7000 is a lot of miles for debris to grind on those chains and guides. 5w-20 is awful thin to try and protect those chains and guides. Hopefully you used the 5w-30 which was the original spec for the 4.6 before Ford changed it for fuel economy standards.

I've used 5w20 in it since switching to full synthetic only in 2012 but I'll likely go with 5w30 next time at this point in its life.

9+ years ago I exclusively used fl820 during the purolator string days and Motorcraft full syn, with some pretty long oci's, I wonder what the filters looked like in those days but I also got Blackstone testing each time. Aside from slightly elevated silicon they attributed possibly to my old Airaid intake (I put the factory air box back on recently), they said it looked good and tbn showed I could try going even longer but I usually didn't.

Do the FL820s’s still have tearing issues?
The one in this thread looks pretty wasted ... the pleats on this one have the potential to tear being as wide as they are. FL820S filters look pretty ragged most of the time for some reason, vs say the FL500S.

Yeah this one doesn’t look amazing. Was mainly asking for a friend who has an F250 with a 7.3 gas engine that takes this filter. He recently discovered there are better options than the FRAM TGs he’s been using and asked for my recommendations. I run Motorcrafts on my own truck (2.7L EcoBoost) and Premium Guard on everything else, and Motorcraft and PG-made filters are what I was gonna recommend to him, but knowing the issues that have occurred with the FL820S, I think it’s probably best to avoid it.
