More Junk Parts. Very Frustrating.

Noticed that the grand marquis had started to shimmy agaain. I had to pull one of the wheels off to replace a dryrotted valve stem from 2022 ... another failed part .... When I went to put the lug wrench on the wheel moved a bit. Thought it was a wheel bearing again ...

Discovered that one of my tierod ends (MOOG) has got lose and has a bunch of slack in it. Little disappointed since these only have about 12000 miles on them.

This is after I replaced wheel bearings in November (originals went 168000 miles), March and April of this year.

Last year I replaced the original fuel pump at 163000 miles and 24 years. The Delphi fuel pump went a month and 1300 miles before failing and leaving me in a construction zone on a 95 degree day.

New cars are apparently all garbage. Can't find good parts for old vehicles.

If I didn't drive so much ... leasing would make sense.

Well, at least this a quick job to replace. A couple dozen dollars and some time doing some car repair yoga on some sheets of cardboard isn't a bad way to earn a cold beer. My last moog purchase was a sway bar link, that split the boots in about the same mileage, so I don't pay a premium for their parts anymore.

2021 and 2022 Outbacks here. Maligned 2.5L engines. Zero warranty issues and normal maintenance only. One battery replacement under warranty and one after OEM warranty expired. Each nearing 60K miles. Maybe there are a couple of good vehicles out there. 60K service by dealer will run about $2K because I can't do any of my mechanical work anymore.

I would bet the common denominator is Chinese made. So far my Delphi fuel pump is going strong after four years on my G.M. Knock on wood....Original didn't make it to 45k miles..

Subarus used to be a good value, but they're just crazy on price now (what isn't?).

I had a 2018 Forester than I loved. Unfortunately, it had 7 warranty visits for non functional AC and was sold to Carvana with non functional AC at 48 or 58k miles ... can't remember.

Everyone told me the engine would burn oil or leak and I never had any consumption except the one run where I used Mobil 1

I’m in a similar battle right now with the 2007 Sonata my little sister drives.

O’Reillys junk fuel injectors. They’re new too. 4 defective ones so far. Having the originals rebuilt now as the dealer doesn’t sell them anymore.

The quality of replacement parts is all over the place. Some use the cheapest parts because they expect to buy a new car soon. Others use high-end parts because they plan on keeping the car for a long time. I notice Rockauto typically has a wide range of selection when it comes to replacement parts. Pick accordingly.

It is not.
Quality control depends on the brand.
I always run ATE brakes if I can find, or other Euro brands.
Got ATE rotors in 2020 for BMW, Made in China. Ran them 45k before upgradimg brakes to Brembo set up. Of those 45k, 7k was on track using racing/track pads. I took them off and they were still good, no vibrations etc.
They were $57 for a piece.
Then I used Brembo on VW Atlas, Made in USA, started to vibrate after 6k.

So much issues with new parts here as well. On top of my head during the last year of two of owning several cars and fixing some friends cars: Delphi fuel pump dead after 20k km, TRW struts doing absolutely nothing and making the car dangerous to drive after 13k km, same thing with Monroe. Lemforder engine mount failing after a month or two. Febi drive shaft bearing making an awfull noise: dead of the box. Moog ball joints shot after a few weeks. Hose sold as fuel hose cracking after a few years and causing severe safety concern...

I have to be very picky now. It is so problematic for a DIY like me, i can't even think what's it's like to run a business with the parts quality going south so quickly. That being said, some brands never let me down so far but i don't buy enough parts to draw conclusions.

Moog PS entire front end parts with grease zerk, and sway bar bushings on 2007 Town and country. So far so good. About 25k miles.

Sachs struts and shocks also very good on this van. KYB fast struts had coil bind that was noisy and annoying. Sachs have what feels like better and more sophisticated dampers. Yes it’s a van, but it’s our road trip vehicle. The steering on these is amazing, with fresh parts installed. Actually satisfying to drive distances with.

Moog problem solver or regular Moog?

Regular Moog, problem solver not available for 98-02 cars.

Funny thing about that. The AAA driver who towed me home when the fuel pump went out on the Mercury asked what brand of fuel pump I put in because he put a Delphi pump in his silverado and it made it 3 days. He wasn't surprised when I told him delphi.

Surely there's a middle ground between new and 168k mile cars that you can't get parts for. Seem to recall you don't like spending much on cars.

Being in NY , used cars aren't any value. Something 5 years old is already starting to have severe rust issues. Especially with how much the state has laid down salt the in the last few years.

IF you can import a car or find something that is older, high mileage without a lot of rust that's a good buy. Kinda like this car. I just didn't expect that all parts would be junk.

If the labor is significant then OEM makes sense. There are some dealers that have a website to sell OEM parts at a discount.

Get the vehicles rust proofed. Even if you cannot do it your self it's cost effective. NH Coatings, CarWell, Krown. Just not Ziebart.
