More crazy neighbor stories

Not at all, I’m highlighting the protections you get with an HOA. Nowhere did I say that I think non-HOA communities look like this, your creating words to fit a statement.

I spent 40 years of my life in non HOA communities on affluent Long Island.
Please don’t try to convince me that out of 2000 homes in a Long Island community that some people don’t get stuck living next to neighbors under the conditions I described, including other posts in this forum from others

Your perception of the south is backwards the evidence is people flea those affluent northeastern and West Coast communities to come here. Not only that but they have their own HOA’s.

I’ve also highlighted all the benefits you get, private roads, multiple community pools, gymnasiums, tennis Pickleball courts well manicured public areas, ponds, and lakes, for the exclusive use of community members only
What's your monthly HOA fee?

Yup, and some of those stupid people end up working for an HOA sometimes.
For sure, I see it on message boards from communities we were considering moving to. It's best I avoid those people, because just from some of their comments I know I wouldn't get along with them.

I live out in the sticks and don't really have any crazy neighbor stories, the houses aren't that close. But you would think I would have one by now. So, I would assume the only logical realization this morning is I am the crazy neighbor?
Hmmm, that just might check out.

Board members are people who live in the community and run for the board because they have interest in doing good. They are elected by the residents of the community and are residents themselves, In addition the time they serve which is unpaid is limited in the HOA documents.

Board members do not get paid in almost all cases. It is a voluntary position. They do not work for "the HOA"

(you may know this but so many people do not)
Clearly living in a restricted community is not for everyone as pointed out here by you, others and by @demarpaint ;) But ain't that America? Free choice baby! We love living in a resort community, everything we need to stay active, fit and busy with friends who do the same.

Yep, the home of the free and the brave! Like I said, not all HOAs are bad, you have to do your homework. But when they start replacing roofs on buildings that are clearly not in need a roof, or paving a lot that doesn't need to be repaved because some of the good ole boys on the board know someone in those businesses those are communities I want to avoid. I remember my father's place here on L.I. had the lot repaved twice and the 40 year roofs replaced twice in the 22 years he lived there. When my parents moved into their community their unit was two years old. I saw the roofs, and the lot hundreds of times over the years they were there. Trust me the roofs were in great shape and could have easily gone 25 years!! The lot, repaved once, not twice! I said to my father, hey Pop someone is getting a kickback, I wish I could take the roof they're ripping off and put it on my house. It's a shame he wasn't able to partake in the kickbacks. LOL They didn't have a choice, and a special assessment fee was added to the HOA to cover the cost.

Good point, let me clarify. I am not a condo/co-op person. I would never buy into one. It goes without saying, that your unit is under the care of a third party after all they are attached units and someone has to be incharge.
That is a whole other world.

My comments are about residential single family homes. Like anything in the world, of course there is good and bad.

We lived in an HOA once. The president pulled up my “Giant Meteorite “ signs during silly season

A CLEAR violation of my civil rights

And she got read real well. They entire riot act and USA Constitution

My only obligatory post here is related to the guy running to the HOA for a dorg issue and my opinion that new moth balls are no longer toxic organic waste

Unfortunately there are residential single family HOA communities that are corrupt too. Redoing clubhouse and community center roofs, gunite pools that don't need it, paving work, etc. One still has to do their homework before buying onto any community with an HOA.

Well, honestly, you either want amenities or you don’t. It’s just the way the world works. If you don’t want any amenities, then it’s easy.

You certainly have more control over your local resident managed and elected HOA who are unpaid and serve for one to three years then you do politicians and public parks who become career public servants.

I don’t understand the West Coast slang that you use many times 🤣
It truly goes right by me!

I want amenities, I don't want to get ripped off, which is why I do my homework. I'm reasonably certain you checked out your HOA and made sure it passed muster. One of the areas we were interested raised their HOA 47% over a four year period, that imo is a rip off and warrants further investigation. There are areas with a lot of houses up for sale because of the HOA, that's like buying a bad used car, no thanks.

The timing of this thread..... We've been in HOA communities for 25 years or so and have never had a problem with or been obstructed by them, but I'd call both of them "HOA Lite" as they are in single family, rural areas and focus on maintaining the common areas (dock & ramps, beaches and entrance gardens) and upholding minimal appearance and maintenance standards. No flag Nazis. There have been a few issues in the 'hood that the HOA had to get involved in but they were necessary; new homeowner clearing property that wasn't theirs, severe lack of maintenance, etc. I've advised the HOA but was never directly involved.

However, for the first time ever, I reached out to the HOA. I went out for my morning caffeine and passed this...even my 'live and let live' philosophy has a limit. Town doesn't pick this up and it's in the street.

From now on Wings&Wheels shall be known as Karen&Wheels!:ROFLMAO:

In all seriousness, have some bloody respect and consideration for your neighbors...these folks have been frequent flyers.

Political signs. Pulled out of my land. Thrown on my porch.

Local precinct officer received word of this. He read the HOA President the laws and rights which were violated. Signs went back up. Lucky for her no further prosecution

I had this in non-HOA's, just immature neighbor. I had an inkling it was the stay-at-home dad a few houses down; dual Subaru wagons was a clue :ROFLMAO: (and I like Subarus). Wife was the bread winner and much more intimidating of the two....did I just say that out loud?? After a few instances I put out another sign and worked from home, this was the mid 90's before remote work so he'd expected the house to be empty. Sat back, did some calls, enjoyed my coffee then, as expected, I saw him. So I went out to say Hi and have a friendly chat, problem solved.

People volunteer, not "work" for the HOA. I have put up with some real stupidity (off and on) for 6+ years and did it with full composure, never lashed back, and never got a penny for it.

I know you are just attempting to take a swipe at HOA's, but check what you post.

In 6+ years, I never, ever, got a tiny bit of appreciation for helping "maintaining property values". That's the real purpose of an HOA. People don't get it, without an HOA having and enforcing at least minimal neighborhood standards, their $400K home could quickly become a $250K home when they go to sell it. Or worse.

Yes sir, thank you for keeping me in line, may I have another? Should I file a permit with you before I post next time. Don't want to violate any rule, you know.
