I'm going to try putting some paper coffee filter material in the K cup, and see if it filters better.

Yep, that "mud" is common when using the fine mesh screen refillables. You can purchase little paper filters that fit in some of the after market refillables and that eliminates the sediment or grounds ending up in your cup. I bought 6 refillables for around $11 and the filters are like 100 ct for $8. I've moved away from using the prefilled K-cups for several reasons and use the refillable + filter combo.

+++3 I have 1 cup of coffee in the morning and rarely one in the afternoon or evening. So the cost of the K-cups is minuscule. Plus I easily get to have so many great flavored coffees at my choosing. I also have a Keurig ground filter attachment where I can use ground coffee in the machine, never use it though. I unlike my neighbors who don't recycle anything, recycle just about anything recyclable all the time. So in all honesty I'm not too broken up by using ~7-9 K-cups a week.
