Model 3 parking assist degraded

I got a call from my dad where he was freaked out that his Model 3 no longer gave an estimated distance to obstructions. He relied on it to back it into the garage and he can’t seem to cope with looking over his shoulder or even just looking at the backup camera. He’s been very reliant on this feature,

I had a look at it and basically it looks like a bunch of smudges. I looked it up and thought maybe recalibrating the camera would be a good idea. However, it looked the same before that recalibration step.

Any ideas how long this might take to clear? I tried cleaning off all the cameras. Front, back, both side pillars, and the two on the front fenders. That didn’t help so I went with camera recalibration.

Use the cellphone app to schedule service. Enter the problem under "Cameras and Sensors".
When I reported the 12v battery message last year, they sent out a mobile tech 2 days later. I would get it done because the functionality is probably part of accident avoidance and other functionality.

Curious; was this after a OTA update or just out of the blue? I think there was an update to the parking assist back in June or July if I remember right...

Please post your results.

There might have been a software update. I didn't really look at other photos on the web of parking assist degraded, and I can't find anything quite like these clouds/smudges.

New software update with the 3d parking. It looks weird in a garage. The distance was a rough guess in my experience before the update.

Found this. Not sure why it just showed up yesterday on my parents’ Model 3, but others were reporting it three weeks ago.

I guess this is the new normal, where it doesn’t necessarily provide an estimated obstacle distance. But my dad’s near vision is rather poor these days, and he was highly reliant on those big letters indicating “15 Inches”.

However, after the camera calibration, it’s not showing anything on the road other than maybe virtual lane lines.

It's not showing cars, lights, stop signs, etc. either? I really don't care for what they did with park assist. It was bad before. I was actually not too pleased when they finally added it. I liked it before the screen did dumb stuff at low speeds. I think my biggest gripe with it is that it's not showing actual distances based on ultrasonic sensors, so especially once you get past the point of the camera being able to see it's only guessing based on what it last saw, which is all I'm able to do from the driver's seat. I'd love to be able to shut the system off. It looks stupid and I can see the corners of the car better than what its guess is.

That has to be a bug in the latest release. Why would they reduce functionality?
I don't know that they actually reduced functionality. The car already was lying to the driver because it didn't have enough information from 4 cameras to do what it's doing. My favorite is the park assist though. I remember seeing a story on Reddit where someone was able to park so close to their garage door that they were almost touching and it said they still were 21 inches away. I thought it was a random glitch, but I was able to recreate it in my own driveway. That was before this update though, they might have fixed that. I could understand if it was something below the camera line, but I think what's happening is that when it's close enough to the garage door that it can't see the edges of the garage door it gets lost in the sea of one flat, solid color.

I just can't get over how bad the design is for the intended use. I'll still buy another one of their cars because I will physically drive it and it's a good driving experience, but all the supposed tech they've added is atrocious. These cameras are what's supposed to make this thing self drive. Yikes.

Part of this update that they've tried to make Autopilot and FSD(oh I want to break things when I see that term) more naggy and safer, it also is quicker to not trust it's own cameras. Have a little dirt or dust over the B pillar and the sun is on that side? The car will tell you it can't see. It'll let you know even if you're not using any assist features. I'm assuming that means the car will kick out of any form of driving assist if that happens. My wife was driving in fog the other day and was not pleased that she couldn't set the cruise control because the camera couldn't reliably see for following distances. My VW had no problem with the same conditions less than an hour later because it uses radar for cruise with a camera overlay. There's basically no redundancy in the system. This wasn't even a driving too fast for conditions scenario. She could not set the cruise at all at any speed. It was really foggy to be fair, but that's a problem.

I just read that back. Looks like I hate these cars to someone that doesn't know me. 😂

You park a car in garage, just to wake up owning different, not necessarily better, vehicle.
Yeah, somewhat. Most of the time is positive, like adding new apps I like to use that syncs with my phone usage. Now it has all the apps I use on a daily basis and I'm able to use them in every car and device I own, though if it had CarPlay I wouldn't have been waiting to do so. I just wish there was a toggle to shut off these assists. I can shut off everything else. At least it doesn't yell at you and make noise, but maybe I was able to shut that part off and don't remember doing it. 😂

There are various nags like lane warning or even lane assist. Might be a good idea for my father, who tends to drive close to the edge of the lane (but I don’t tell him because be gets angry at any criticism of his driving).

In this case nothing shows up when driving other than the virtual lane lines, but it could be due to the camera reset. It also says maybe 100 miles of driving with prominent lane lines will help complete calibration, but my parents live in an area with mostly undivided roads.

The parking aids in their garage are kind of wonky. I was testing it out and it was indicating stop when it was about 4 feet from the end of the wall and the garage door would have closed on the front bumper. Previously it was indicating maybe 13 inches when it was 3 feet away. Their garage is painted white though. I’m wondering if maybe lines of tape might help. But I’m starting to understand the blobs indicate

Yeah, the blobs make sense over time, they're just weird. Do you have the Autopilot (beta) option checked? I think that's what originally added all of the displays on the screen showing various things on the road. I don't use the features, but it did add these things to the road display when on. I wonder if it turned it off on their car when it updated if it did display before. I didn't get any warnings to recalibrate after the update, but I wasn't the first to drive it after it updated. I don't think it went more than 10 miles before I drove it though.

When my son was maybe 1 1/2yrs old at 1am he had fever 105. I packed him and blasted to ER through 8” of snow during blizzard. I just can’t wrap my mind around idea that I am in situation like that, sit in a car and car now has different functions.
IMO idea of doing things like that is absolute idiocy!

I’m looking at it right now and don’t see anything available other than Autosteer, which isn’t set. I was thinking maybe it was where my dad said he was wiping the screen but maybe he changed some setting since he didn’t go into screen clean mode.

It should say something below Autosteer that if you turn it on it'll show street lights and stop signs. It won't engage autosteer anyway if you don't pull down twice on the right stalk instead of just once to set the cruise. I believe turning that on is what gave me all the extra displayed screen info.

It shouldn't though. All that changed here is how it displays the parking assist. No buttons appeared, moved, or were removed. It only gives you the option to update through the app or the vehicle's screen. I don't believe it will auto update. I've never had the car update without my wife or I accepting an update because it will warn you the car can't be driven while installing. It also tells you what the update will change. I've never seen the UI completely change like a computer or phone could.

My friends mum is a terrible driver too. They simply installed bumper boards like a car wash that jerk the car into proper place/stop instead of paying to fix body of car/and or drywall.

Definitely clever. A bit scary about her driving ability though.
