Mobil1 High Mileage- oil consumption

I would stay with it. It could be cleaning up a lot and it should settle down.

I agree. My problem has been the dreaded dipstick combined with synthetic oil. Sometimes I get false readings on multiple attempts. I need to start checking the oil in the mornings when the engine is cool.

I started using M1 10W30 HM at about 125,000 miles. Now have about 275,000 miles (99 Avalon). I change the oil every 7,000 to 8,000 miles. I have to add about a qt or less between changes, but no leaks. I had the valve covers off at 210,000 miles and there was a little varnish, but no buildups.

In many cases it's a slippery slope for sure, especially if the level goes down below add mark.

I`m surprised it wasnt very clean going 85000 miles on MB-1 HM. As other people have mentioned before usually a MB-1 engine is clean enough to eat off inside.

I think that has more to do with the fact that varnish is hard to clean off without resorting to mechanical methods. The engine probably had varnish before Mobil 1 HM run and it simply stayed that way.

This is my experience and advise. NOACK is a test number in a lab for an motor oil. It is a good guide but it is not always indicative on what will happen when you put the particular oil in your crank case. Test and lab results happen in a laboratory setting and the results do not always pan out that way in life. Your engine may "behave" different from every other engine in its engine family or your driving habits are just different there is many instances where having a oil with a very low NOACK on paper, when used in a particular engine and the engine would just consume it like drinking water. Other times a oil with a high NOACK on paper and the engine would hardly consume any. The point being use NOACK as a guide but do not assume because a oil with good NOACK numbers will preform as well for you.

For the first 75,000 miles or so, I used Castrol 5W30. I then switched to Castrol 10W30 HM until about 125,000. From that point I used M1 10W30 HM. I'll have the valve covers off again around the 300,000 mile mark.

That`s still plenty of miles for it to have done better. I`m not bashing MB-1 HM, I used it in my RX and it was very smooth/quiet on that oil. (just an unexplained burning oil smell?) My point is with the extra cleaning agent`s etc. I would think it would be spotless.
