I agree, it does have a framesque look about it. I don’t remember seeing any other ones like this before. Maybe I wasn’t paying attention. Who knows.Looks like a FRAM baseplate.

There is a reason they don't brag about itIt's pretty hilarious when a filter manufacturer claims their filter's efficiency is "proprietary" or "secret" and can't tell the consumer what it is.![]()
Use it!!!!! It’s totally fine. I run cheap jobbers on my fleet of trucks and use them in my service department.....never had a problem in literally millions and millions of miles. My tow trucks average 85-110k miles a year each.Realistically, is there a good reason to believe it won't still be a quality filter? M1s have been my go-to for years....though I do use Ultras from time to time.
The question wasn't about quality but about a different manufacture. This comment is completely left field from what this whole thread is about.Realistically, is there a good reason to believe it won't still be a quality filter? Absolutely not out in left field. Perhaps you need to read every post....#4 and #8 in particular before commentingThe question wasn't about quality but about a different manufacture. This comment is completely left field from what this whole thread is about.
Perhaps you need to reread post #1 of the thread. We are commenting on the changes in manufacture, not about the quality of the filter. Post #23, is the first one commenting on the performance (quality) of the filter. If you fail to see that, I am done with this conversation. Good Day.Absolutely not out in left field. So, is the change back to the 'original' style? Because I kind of prefer the one with all the mini holes. lol@TrainingPolicy
Back in March 2019, they did the same thing. These were the two models sold under the M1-104A part number. The one on your left was the "newer" design and the one on your right was phased out. On my last visit to Walmart yet another change appears to have taken place as you've noted.

I was a parts guy at one time but I'd agree with that statement.A long time ago in a far away land, parts counter people tended to be wizened old mechanics. They had become too seasoned to continue working on cars so they generously shared their invaluable experience with lesser mortals about parts, pieces and the Zen of auto mechanics.
Imagine Obi-Wan Kenobi tutoring Luke Skywalker but there is no sequel.
.....I am done with this conversation.....
A few years ago, when Honeywell spun off their legacy AlliedSignal Automotive businesses, Fram/Autolite and Prestone got sold to the Rank Group. Fram then bought out Champion Labs. A few years ago, Champ was again independent but Fram and Autolite got bought out by Trico and the new Trico Group bought out Champ Labs, again.Looks like a FRAM baseplate.
You mean the burr is a blur? Strike that... the other way 'round.Sometimes digital pictures show a shadow or a artifact that looks real.
Looks like a Fram, with a Fram date code, it's Fram/Champ (both Trico owned now).
It is 99% at 30 microns when mobil 1 annual or 20000 miles filter come out which is few year back 2-3 yearsLooks like the efficiency has gone down on these. Use to be 99% at 25 microns. Its now 99% at 30 microns according to their website.
Yup I would much rather have 2 WIX standard oil filters than 1 Mobil 1 oil filter. My biggest concern with M1 filters is the CONSTANT changes in manufacturers-combined with the generally high price, means they're not a good value, at all. Unknown efficiency, too.
The 2 filters that OP shows are both Champ-the 5 hole one is old style Champ, the other one is newer Fram/Champ (AKA "Frampion"), and Sayjac, you're right, the newest ones are Mann & Hummel, not the good kind, either!I followed this thread since first posted, interestingly none of the images shown are those of the new current M1 manufacturer, M&H's Puro US. The M1-104A equivalent to 9688/(3593a) pictured, just shows a Champ Labs (after Rank unloaded Champ, latter emerged from bankruptcy 12/2016 ) baseplate design change that as noted took place awhile ago. Went from old flat base plate design to the beveled thread boss, similar to 'some' Fram filters. Date code images shown is at that time typical Champ Labs.
As point of information, it's been much more than a "few years" since Honeywell sold off Fram filters then to Rank Group, about a decade in fact. That lasted about 8 years, then sold to Trico now called First Brands. M1 apparently now decided to move away from FB Champ as manufacturer.
