I have a 94 Nissan 4wd with the 3.0 v-6. It only has about 106k on it and runs pretty good for being a decade old. I put the new Mobil DC 5w-30 in (along with LC) thinking that it would provide better protection with its Grp III base oil than the 10w-30 Castrol. My only complaint is a case of piston slap. These motors are known to do it, but the DC does it worse than the Castrol and Syntec Blend. Is it the lack of Moly maybe? Has anyone else had any anamolies with this oil?

What is piston slap? I have heard this term for years, but have never really known what it referred to and what caused it.

Patman, that makes total sense in light of the fact that Castrol oils have been great in this motor before. I guess I got ahead of myself on the GF-4 bandwagon. The motor has little noises that I have never heard before, may be best to go back to the tried and true.

Question about the Start Up. Will the esters cause sludge and varnish build up since they are polar and cling to metal?

Why don't you give the new Castrol StartUp oil a try? G Man II recently reported that the use of this oil in his van has elminated (or at least very drastically reduced) the piston slap problem he had with it.

Esters are supposedly better at keeping things clean, so the opposite should be true, you should have less chance of sludge and varnish.

I was thinking two things:

1- Thicker oil ie 10w-30
2- Oil with moly (DC had none before GF-4)

Like I said the motor runs fine, no change there or in any real fuel economy. Just thought the GF-4 might be a good idea, looks like my choice was wrong this time.

DustyJoe, now you know that would NOT be in keeping with the spirit of BITOG at all! That would mean that we would not experiment, or obsess, or argue about the lubricity of this or that. What an awful and boring world that would be

I hope it does settle down as it is ony a nuissance (like Kerry said) and does nothing to the drivability.

You would be better off with a heaver base oil such as 10w 30 over 5w 30 to help piston slap in my experience.
