Something here is not making sence. The new M1 gold cap extended service oil product that costs around $2.00 more per quart is supposed to be the new longer lasting better additive package oil, but you say the silver cap is the same as the original red cap formula and is a better oil than the gold cap product? Please explain this, as everything I have read regarding the new gold cap oil states it has a better more robust additive package than the original red cap 15/50 oil.

I can't wait to hear the answer myself. Why isn't the EP 15w50 as good? Why do people claim the old red cap stuff is better?

I had serious problems with the EP in my turbo race car. The red cap was trouble free.

Possible reasons: Gold cap has (for sure) 1/2 or less, the ZDDP, might (very likely) be made from GROUP III base stock and (for sure, in real life) does not hold viscosity as well under extreme heat.

Disclaimer, I am only 1 person, with results that apply to only my situation. I believe I can understand my results and might be able to apply them to other similar situations.

For example, the gold cap DID NOT coke up my turbo, even under race conditions where some coke is expected. The gold cap did result in cam and follower wear rates beyond what I am used to, likely the lack of ZDDP. Race car engines turning high RPM with strong valve springs are hard on components. Good oil is required. Or maybe it is the excessive heat related LOW OIL PRESSURE causing the valve problem (lack of film strength) in addition to the turbo failure.

One thing is certain, red cap was trouble free.

I'm not sure what "ZDDP" is, but it would be interesting to speak with a Mobile oil person who has the real scoop on both products, not just some phone person reading from a pre printed answer sheet. I use the 20/50 Mobile vtwin product in my wife's HD, but I have read on several M/C sites that the gold cap or the old red cap 15/50 is good stuff for water cooled M/C engines, with or without wet clutches. So far my 05 Honda ST1300 and my 05 Kawasaki ZX12R both seem to do well with the product. Hopefully I don't have problems down the road.
