Any of you use Mobil 1 syn with a cheap filter?
When I say cheap, I mean using puralotor or STP, not the pure 1 filter...just plain jane filter.

And want to know if this filter is ok for 4-5k interval on synthetic?

A friend of mine thinks if I go Synthetic I should use the best (Mobil filter or K&N), but I'm not going 7500-10000K OCI's

When I think of a cheap filter, I think of Fram.

The Purolator Prem+ filters I use is a relabeled German Mann Hummel..Yeah, cheap.

Hmm...does that mean that it won't go into bypass mode within 7500 miles?

No problem using Mobil 1 oil with a Purolator PP filter.

Michael,
I've gone 16,000 miles with a Purolator PP with no problems in my wife's Honda.

But I don't know if it went into bypass mode.

I use Mobil 1 with Purolator Premium Plus filters on three different vehicles for 5K intervals and I feel safe that the oil and filter would last longer. When the warranties are up on these cars, I'll do UOA and extend.

Why not use the M1 filter for 10K-12K miles, changing only the oil at the 5K-6K mark? These filters are designed to go long OCI's, so even if you don't feel comfortable leaving the oil in too long (4-5K), you can leave the filter on for 2 or even 3 short drains.

If you do not want to go with long OCIs...why waste the money on syn ? Stick with a good dino or blend and a "middle of the road" filter and do your 5k OCIs happy as a clam.

Some cheap filters are not necessarily bad filters. Like Supertech. STP is also okay.
I change the oil on all my family's cars, bascially I use Mobil 1 with Motorcrafts on the the Fords and AC's on the GM's. Cost about $2.99, what the heck?

I thought about that as well; however, our minivan get 2 mile trips in the winter, oil like doesn't heat up much in that time, and I'm concerned about condensation/break down. Tell me this. Would using a good dino every 3k under those driving conditions offer me the same protection as usying synthetic every 4-5k?

I do it, using Supertechs or Advance Auto store brand (purolators).

My sole motivation for using Mobil 1 is its cold crankability and protection; I use it only in the winter. I'm not really into extended drains. This combo "feels" really good starting at -25'F and the filter has very little to do with it.

The Purolator filters are good filters. If you want to save money, loose the Mobil 1 and try someting like Chevron Supreme Synthetic for a lot less. The Purolator is good for your 4-6k miles, no problem. The Mobil 1 is probably good for the same interval, too.

Given what I know about filters and some of the posts on this web site, I would say cheap filters are not a bad thing. In fact, selection of the right CHEAP filters are a good thing.
Having said that, I have had 250,000 miles 15,000 mile oci's with FRAM PH8A filters (2 for 5 dollars,(17/18 each) on one car. This filter is probably THE archetypical FRAM filter!!

The balance of the 495,000 miles on 7 cars using 15,000 OCI's with most being made by oem Toyota and Champion Labs. 5/6 filters, AC Delco PF44's at 2 per. I am expecially looking forward to using the SuperTech 7317 (WALLYMART filters made by Champion Labs) at 2.07 each on a 2004 Honda Civic.

On a Jetta TDI I am on 67k with OEM type cartridge filters at 5.50 per. (not many aftermarket filter oems make replacement cartridge filters). I am using Delvac One 5w40, aka Mobil One Truck & SUV 5w40 and doing 25,000 OCI's.

I'm guess you do mostly highway driving?
I'd like to see you go 15000 oci with driving your car 2 miles, shut it off, after 3 hours, turn car back on, drive 2 miles back home.
Later that night 1.5 miles to Walmart, 1.5 miles back. over and over again.

I still think a syn is a waste of money in your case unless it gets really cold. My MIL has a 1992 Explorer with 22,000 miles. Same conditions(minus winters) as you experience. 1 trip to Wally World every week whether she needs to go or not. The car spent it's whole life on 10w30 dino changed avery 6 months. It is clean under the valve covers. If draining $4/qt oil every 5 months makes you sleep better ....truck on.

I don't have that kind of lifestyle (to WM and back x20)

On one car I have gone 3 years with out a OCI because at one point it only went 5k per year. So I guess by default that it what has actually happened.
