Mobil 1 - Why Synthetics?

I've bought 18 quarts of Mobil Super Synthetic 0w20 at O'Reilly's Auto Parts in the past week. Shaking the quart bottle, it sounds like water......nice and light and thin.

For some of my Friends, Family and Neighbors who like to use the name "Mobil", I will be mixing this 50/50 with Mobil Delvac Super 1300, 15w40 this Fall for their winter OCI's.

In NYC it is not cost effective to run a full synthetic for a long period of time since it is VERY severe driving with short trips, lots of idling in stop and go traffic, lots of traffic lights and slow speeds. This all adds up to fuel dilution, dirty air filters and plenty of wear and tear so the oil has to be changed by at least 6K miles. Even 6K miles is stretching out the OCI to the MAX.

The mix of Diesel Dino and synthetic is the way to go in this environment.

I like how they say that conventional oils receive a score of 0 on OEM deposit tests even though Mobil offers a conventional oil which they market as a high quality conventional that is resistant to forming deposits.

Hm...never thought that molecule uniformity would make a difference in friction. Theoretically of course it would...but does this translate into measurable real world wear reduction or MPG gains?

But what about PP's "Adaptive Molecules"?

Last I saw, the estimate was ~1%. They always show oil molecules as little round ball bearings but they really don't look like that. And they also don't show the asperities on the surface which are WAY bigger than the size of an oil molecule.

"Uniformity" also ignores VII (thousands of times bigger), ZDDP and every other additive in the oil which are different.
