Was the Mobil 1 Extended Performance that I bought worth the extra money?

Regular Mobil 1 10w30 SuperSyn in a 5qt jug was $20.17, Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30 was $25.96 for a 5qt jug. In the end, the price difference between the two is around $1/qt.

I am planning to run the oil for 10K in a 2L VW 4-cyl engine with a 4.5qt sump using an Mobil 1 Filter. Was the higher TBN, better basestock, and higher level of AW additives worth the extra $1/qt or 20-25% more?

Mike

Michael,

As in my latest topic titled "OCI Opinions", I too am trying to determine for myself if the Mobil 1 Extended Performance is worth the extra money. I think it may be worth the extra money in my case since I'd be changing the Mobil 1 Extended Performance @ 7500 mile OCI vs. M1 at 5000 mile OCI.

With the more robust additive package, I'm more willing to push my OCI to 7500 miles with the Mobil 1 Extended Performance. In fact, by doing 2 oil changes vs. 3 oil changes (for 15K miles for example), it'll actually be cheaper for me to change the oil.

Michael, I'm glad to see you finally got a car to try out some oil for yourself. I'm sure you picked the EP because you thought the extra expense was worth it, and I won't disagree with you on that choice.

If you are running long change intervals it is worth the extra. You are running long change intervals at 10,000 miles and VW's seem to be hard on oil so yes worth the extra dollar. Compare to 6000 mile interval with regular M1.

As Tooslick always said, you get what you pay for. 50% more SuperSyn and 30% more anti-wear additives. So yes it's worth it. Oil is cheap anyway so whats a $1 difference?

Nah...not my car. Family member's car, cousin's actually.

I change M1 at 10k intervals, I'd not hesitate to take EP to 15K. Heck, I even take tropartic to 7500mi no problems in my 94 civic ex, Mobil clean 5000 to 5k+, clean7500 to 7.5k+, chevron dino 3k-5k.. Mostly freeway though, but i do 'redline' at least once per day.

You said "Was the Mobil 1 Extended Performance that I bought..." and "I am planning to run the oil for 10K in a 2L VW." Signed by you...

Anyway, you can probably keep a close-enough eye on your cousin's car. Is he going to do an UOA?

I guess it all depends when the time comes. If its convenient, I guess I can have her or my uncle drop off a sample at the lab that's close by.

My uncle should be able to get to the car often enough to keep an eye on the oil level, hopefully, as some have said that the 2.0L burns oil??? I guess it was a good thing that they bought the 5qt jug, not only did they save some $$$, but they have some leftover for top-up.

The other reason why I chose the EP (though largely because of value) was due to the possibility of having a greater margin of error in the event that the oil is run beyond its original intended interval.

Mr. Wan, I do believe you just answered your own question!

Fellas,
I am 3000 mi into a 15K run on Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W30. I will do an UOA and see how well it holds up. If the UOA is decent, it is worth the $. M1 = $20/5QT Mobil 1 Extended Performance = $25/5QT. $25
My prescription OCI = 7500 BTW.

At the risk of beating a dead mori-horse (

), I'd have chosen Mobil 1 10W-40 for the VW engine, because it meets ACEA A3, while the 10w30 meets only ACEA A1. Of course, not everyone drives like like Niki Lauda, so maybe it won't matter.

Run the OCI for 25% longer and its paid itself off. No doubt the UOA would turn out better than if you ran it with M1.

1. It needs to be said 10,000 OCI is the recommendation for the 2.0 VW engine. VW uses Castrol GC as oem.

2. VW has a very interesting set of specifications for oils (see the owner's manual) so it is best to select oils that meet those specifications.

3. I know that Mobil 1 0w40 and Truck and Suv meets some/most/all of those specs.

4. I am almost positive the EP does not meet some/most/all of VW specifications. b. So even if it did, the EP's extra's are not worth the price.

5. You probably know I run 25,000 mile OCI's with Mobil 1 Truck and Suv, aka Delvac One 5w40 on a 2003 VW Jetta TDI. I picked up my last 5 qt jug 3 days pre Katrina at a Wal Mart in south central Florida for something like $20.14?

Mori- Actually Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30 is A5/B5 rated, per the product data sheet.

Leo- The car was originally intended to be taken into Jiffy Lube to have the oil service done for $25...but was instead taken to a closer, Pennzoil outfit. This was a terrible mistake as they charged $36

to do the service, obviously that was their regular price and they did not give any credit for bringing our own oil/filter. Now, I'll have to run the oil at least 25% longer to make-up for the costs.

ruking77- not sure if its GC. IIRC, factory fill is a 5w-40, unsure of which brand.

Mobil website says A1, A5, I think.

A1 and A5 are low HTHS (2.6/2.9-3.5) spec oils, that are not suitable for use in engines requiring a normal HTHS (=/>3.5), like the 2.0 VW.
