My friend has a 2006 Mazda 6 and he put Mobil 1 5w 20 full syn in it. Car calls for 5w 20 so he used the propper weight.
Only problem is, now his engine knocks. He took it to the stealership and they told him he voided his engine warrenty by using the full synthetic because syn causes problems with this engine. They told him he should have used a syn blend instead.
Is this a bunch of B S??? Is this true?

B.S. The dealership people are often ignorant. He found ignorance at his dealership and must be prepared to battle them or better yet, go to a different Mazda dealer.

The burden is on them to prove that one of the best motor oils available caused his engine to fail. He needs to learn is Ps and Qs about Magnuson-Moss and get a lawyer involved if Mazda Corporate sings him the same song.

Why would you volunteer all this info. to the dealership? I would have called them saying the car is making funny noises please pick it up.Claiming ignorance of anything mechanical until I absolutely had to.

Bunch of ____!

Go to another Mazda dealership.

Get Mazda Regional rep involved if needed.

Call Mobil 1 for support on this matter.

Get the local TV Consumer Issues guy involved if needed.

There may be something wrong with the engine, and it might be Mazda's fault, or your friend's fault....but it seems nearly impossible to conceive of how using Mobil 1 5W-20 would be able to cause a problem.

Mobil 1 is most likely not even a true Group IV / V anymore. Mobil 1 is probably formulated from the same Group III severely hydrocracked conventional oil that companies can legally call 'synthetic', but is found in a wide range of conventional oils, 'synthetic blends', and 'full synthetics'.

In other words, the dealership may simply be hearing the word 'synthetic' and assume that Mobil 1 is totally different than other oils... this is not true.

Ok...I just spoke to this friend of mine again...he was over reacting...first..he told me his engine was doing this before he put syn in it. 2nd, he called a different dealer in the Chicago area, and the reason he was told that was as you all stated... a bunch of ignorant idiots...

1) Mazda vs. Exxon Mobil. Which one wins? For sure contact Mobil ASAP.

2) SOME Other callers provided good answers.

3) Go back where you bought the oil and ask for Mobil dealer support....

Have him get the dealership put in writeing that his warranty is void due to use of 5W20 full synthetic Mobil-1.He has to get something in writeing from them!He might even get an attorney and have them request in writeing the nature of the warranty claim denial and reson for it! Then he has something to work with. His dealership is trying to get out of warranty work either becuase it does not pay well enough for their taste or because their Area Service or Parts Manager is breathing down their neck to reduce warranty claims! I have seen it happen a bunch of time! I would also get Mazda North AMerica involved in this. Their is phone number for them and for third party aribtrator in the all the Lemon Law books that come with the car from the OEM.
