It's especially funny because this car is notorious for BMW's insistence that their own-branded 10W-60 is the only suitable engine oil. Again, that's one single solitary oil – not a published spec that anyone could formulate to. Not even an exclusive OE-specific spec, as BMW does with its other cars. It's BMW's own 10W-60 or bust.

Better situation for the manual trans but not by much. BMW has had two specific different fluid recommendations (MTF-LT-2 and then MTF-LT-3), both BMW-branded.

I had thought the spec for the diff was just a 75W-140 GL-5 with friction modifier for the limited-slip unit. Evidently Mobil disagrees. Again, BMW calls for one specific fluid (Castrol SAF-XJ and its successors).

That's something else isn't it?.
I realized it might have been because the comment included "mobil.com" and the system thought it was spam and auto-deleted it, so I tried again. Comments keep disappearing right away. Might not be Mobil doing it after all.

Weird either way.

Probably chosen on purpose. No brand can complain they promote another brand that way.
