Mobil 1 Undeserved Bad Reputation?

I see Mobil 1 at Costco all the time. Seems overpriced even at Costco and doesn't have any fancy approvals. I buy the M1 EP 10W-30 at Wal-Mart instead. You should try this. 👈 Currently running in my Tundra.

Always wondered why is so popular that Costco carries them being relatively expensive. Big businesses like Costco typically dump things that don't sell well. Maybe there's something I don't know about this oil but most likely marketing and it has developed good roots. Anyways I've never bought it and never will. 🤣

best to look at the product with its licenses, valid approvals etc. and not the brand name with paid marketing, as some brands just rest on their laurels and old/previous reputation, that may have not kept up with newer competing products', do your own research and learn current oil requirements and specs, formulations etc sometimes not for the better .. that seem to change frequently.

Think Mobil 1 is pretty well liked around here. The EP versions are high quality oils. Their Euro oils are also highly thought of. I used to use it exclusively but have shifted to trying less expensive brands at a reasonable OCI. My vehicles don't know, don't tell them.

I have the same 2.4GDI engine as Chris. I've recommended 3 different Mobil-1s to Chris over the past few months.
Mobil-1 EP Triple Action 10w30
Mobil-1 Euro SP 0w40
Mobil-1 ESP 0w/5w30

These-3 have no bad reputations at BITOG. What they have is just the opposite.

How much in play here is a better base oil and low additives vs an okay base oil pumped up with a strong add package.
Low additives + good base oil = Mobil 1 ????
Very well could be the key - seems to be the route HPL has taken .

Read the OP's umpteen other threads he makes on a weekly basis and it will make a little more sense
Just trying to start conversations around various sides of topics is all to stimulate some back and forth discussions here on BITOG … It’s all good .

I may try the ESP one of these days when I am out of oil.

Isn't it C3 and with high(er) HTHS, low(er) SAPS and not for extended drain? And supposedly better for IVD ... It's been recently on my radar for our GDI and won't impact my shorter OCIs.

I think Mobil1 does get sort of a weird negative view on YouTube and social media because of VOA’s and “low moly”. There is an infatuation with add packs and Mobil1 and their lack of a “big old slug of moly”. And then the UOA’s are ignored, which are usually very good.

When you’re number 1 people want to call users of Mobil1 “Mobil1 fanboys”, sometimes. I personally try all the major brands, minor brands and some boutiques but I think I’m kind of settling in on Mobil1 because it’s easy to get, the prices are very competitive, I can choose from a lot of their products (too many??) and I can walk into any Walmart in America and easily buy it. <<<And this is the biggest runoff sentence of all time.

Oh and just to start all this off, a spectrographic analysis does not show additives. And the “numbers” are far more about your engine and your operating conditions. One doesn’t perform comparative quality terminations between oils using a $30 UOA or VOA.
This should be stickied on this forum. I wonder how many dollars over the years this place has wasted collectively on UOAs that were taken as gospel when the information provided was basically pointless.
