Yes I noticed the relatively high HTHS of the 5w-40. Also, it has a higher density than the other 300Vs. Is that because of a larger content of their VII-ester?

Even in "demanding applications", many modern oils will handle 0.1 - 0.2% soot without showing increased wear, but if we move towards 1%, it's no longer following this trend.

I assume every reference to "it" in your post is to a Motul oil -- not Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck from the thread title.

5w40 is the de facto synthetic oil viscosity for diesels. I don't think there are any gasoline-only 5w40's.

I think your soot numbers are unrealistically low. 0.1-0.2% soot indicates an engine oil that is good for many more miles. I agree that 1.0% is very high, but the stronger diesel-rated oils can still protect engines in a high-soot environment. Most dual-use oils cannot.


TR, you are correct, I am talking about 300V 5w-40. Basically, I would like to ask how the 300V compares to Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck (and D1) in heavy-duty diesel engines as long as soot does not exceed 1%.

The condemnation number for soot for Detroit Diesel 4 stroke engines (50 and 60 series, DD15, Mercedes 900 and 4000) using approved oils is 4.5%. The tests for soot related wear and viscosity increase for CH4, CI4, CJ4, and ACEA ratings ("E") are done in this range.
1% soot may "seem" high but as far as the tolerance of the oil is well within bounds.
Gasoline oils have about 60-70% of the dispersant concentration of diesel oils, or more (I can provide a reference later today).
So 1% should not be a problem, with any modern highly rated oil.

Thanks for this info so far, Charlie. Would you say that dispersancy is all you need to reduce soot related wear? I'm not sure whether 300V is one of these "cleaning type" ester oils.

1% soot is absolutely no problem for these engines and modern HDEOs. I mentioned 1% as it is the maximum I would expect to see in our Cummins 4-BT. It's nice to know that HDEOs are able to handle all this soot, but is there a better choice if we know we will never exceed 1%?

Fuel dilution is the main issue with our duty cycle and the B5 fuel, so expensive racing stuff might be worth it if we can run it long enough (>700 hrs.).
