What does everyone think about running Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck in the VW FSI engine? I know it is not on any VAG approval list. I want something that is going to hold up in the FSI engine. What do you guys think?

Previous oils used:
0-30K: Motul 8100 E-Tech 0W-40 (discontinued)
30K-40K: Motul 8100 X-Max 5w30 (old formula?)
40K-Current: GC
 
I personally like the 0-40 mobil better then the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck in this application. You can check out a Virgin oil analysis in the section. It's loaded with additve and has I believe group IV base stocks
 
Well, it having been -14 and lower these last few days, there is definitely a cranking difference between the 5w40 in our Expedition and the 0w40 in my parent's. The 0w40 seems to have superior cold performance.

I like everything about Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40 -- it may not be the best oil for every engine, but it's [censored] close. I like it much better than the Mobil 1 0w40, but the 0w40 will work for a normal oil change interval.

However, your drive train warranty is 60k miles, so you should use a VW-spec oil until 60k miles.

I'm on my second oil change with it. After my 3rd oil change, I'll send it in for analysis
 
Here in N Virginia the temps do not get that cold (maybe in the teens once or twice) so I am not too concerned about flow in ultra cold temps. I think the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck will flow well enough given the ambient temps we see here.

I do agree about using a 502 oil, however I am not sure too many 502 oils are robust enough(excluding ester based oils.)
 
Since it's not approved by VW, I stick either with Mobil 1 0W-40 or GC 0W-30.

I don't know the reason why 5W-40 is not VW 502 compliant and I am not taking chances with the FSI engine. They already have intake manifold carbon buildup issues as it is so I will not run unapproved oils in it.

Do what you need to do during the warranty period. After that use the best oil that will protect that engine, whether it meets a VW spec or not.

VW approved oils don't buy you anything in terms of valve deposits. In fact some 502 oils show horrible valve deposits. Bottom line is many (most) 502 oils are not good enough in the FSI. F.e this car ran Mobil 1 0w40 at 10k intervals according to the manual. I have yet to see worse looking valve deposits:

Here are some interesting related quotes from Terry Dyson re: the Mobil 1 0W40 use in a DI engine that provides insight into why this happens:

That's a lot of shearing. A 1k OCI is a ridiculous idea/workaround in a 21-st century passenger car. Now I am thinking about doing a used oil analysis on mine.

i say this with a little trepidation since i don't have your engine,but...


#1-are you sure the motul 8100 E-tech 0w-40 has been discontinued? seems to me that i can find it online.

#2-what about the motul X-max 5w-40 VW 502,505? i can find that too.

#3-if i had your engine,i'd take a serious look at the RLI 5w-40.it seems to have been especially developed for audi/VW engines with fuel dilution problems,including a guy on here called RI RS4. there's about two long threads on here about the development of it....but i can not speak for the effectiveness of this oil.

i would pay particular attention to high FP,low volatility and a specially made additive package to reduce deposits on whatever oil i chose with these types of engines.(this type of add-pack sometimes means a little lower TBN,but you can not go by just simply that)

The oils you used previously are good as far as 502 oils go. However typical 502 oils shear badly in this engine (we have over 50 used oil analysis for this engine now). I would suggest an ester-based, shear stable, low volatility oil with a strong additive pack similar to what Priler suggested.

There aren't that many ester based oils out there, and even the term "ester-based" is misleading because no one knows how much ester content is really in them. Some oils that are thought to contain a larger percentage of esters for this application are Motul 300V, Redline 5w40, Renewable lubricants Biosyn 5w40. The redline 5w40 is the only one to stay a 40 weight in this engine of all the 40 weight used oil analysis we have (keep in mind that it starts thicker at 15.1 cst which is one reason, but it also shows probably the lowest shear rates in this engine so far).

I would look for a low volatility, shear stable oil with a strong additive pack (the cam follower is a flat tappet type meaning high ZDDP or other high anti-wear additives are important). I would suggest watching oil life via a used oil analysis if you want to go beyond 5k miles on an oil change. 95% highway runs have been supporting 10k intervals even with common 502 oils.
 
Thanks for the recommendations! After reading what priler and saaber wrote, I am probably going to go with the Redline for my next fill.

So the Motul 300V 5w-40 does shear as well? Are you aware of anybody using the 10w-40 grade 300V?
 
We don't have any 300v used oil analysis yet unfortunately. I would also love to see some x-lite 0w30 used oil analysis for this engine.
 
there are several on the oil analysis section. one of them is on 300v 5w30/blackstone/honda 2.2L/UOA/newer formula,another is a 300v 5w30/blackstone/VOA/newer formula,still another is 300v 5w-40/blackstone/audi 2.7L/UOA/older formula and another is 300v 5w-40/dysonanalysis/96 M3 3.2L but you have to be careful how you read that one because it's a combination of 4 mixed samples,i believe this one was done by D00D who tracks his car.

overall,if you carefully study the motul 300v,you can clearly see that motul has changed their additive pack,probably somewhere around 2000,to a bit mildler,gentler detergents,to allow the slightly reduced zddp to work properly and more than likely reduce deposits at the same time,while still retaining excellent TBN.....quite good add-pack if you ask me and flys against the current trends.

on the 300v 10w-40,motul was pretty specific on the purpose of this oil.it's not that you can't use it,it's just that they made it more of a qualifying type oil.in other words,a racing team might choose it for qualifying but then dump it and use for the actual race,for example,the 15w-50 or one of the others,depending.although,i'm sure the 10w-40 can be used more permanently in some circumstances.

i'm sure the 10w-40 is good but,although it's KV is slightly higher,it's HT/HS is lower. on an aggressively driven street car,imo,the 5w-40 would be better.

Yes I noticed the relatively high HTHS of the 5w-40. Also, it has a higher density than the other 300Vs. Is that because of a larger content of Motul's VII-ester?

Do you have any idea about how the 5w-40 would work in a diesel engine?

Even in "demanding applications", many modern oils will handle 0.1 - 0.2% soot without showing increased wear, but if we move towards 1%, it's no longer following this trend.

I assume every reference to "it" in your post is to a Motul oil -- not Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck from the thread title.

5w40 is the de facto synthetic oil viscosity for diesels. I don't think there are any gasoline-only 5w40's.

I think your soot numbers are unrealistically low. 0.1-0.2% soot indicates an engine oil that is good for many more miles. I agree that 1.0% is very high, but the stronger diesel-rated oils can still protect engines in a high-soot environment. Most dual-use oils cannot.
