With so much filter talk around here (which always seems to center around Fram) I haven't seen anything here about Mobil 1 oil filters... anyone have anything to say about them? (Not that I can find them around here anyway).

I've been wanting to try those filters but haven't seen anyone carrying them in my area. I've been content with the K&N.

I'm sure your topic will get moved to the oil filter section.

M1 filters are readily available at most Autozone stores for around $11. Very pricey.

they are quite heavy duty. They focus their design around good fitration and a well designed filter that won't fall apaprt under abuse. Seems to be geared more towards street use rather than race use.

I have two UOA's posted, same car with M1 oil, one with the alledgedly restrictive M1 filter and one with the alledgedly high-flow K&N. Results are nearly identical but I'll admit the car does not have an oil pressure gauge to see if that's any different.

M1 is a good filter, but at $3.50 an AC Delco seems to given similar results. I like M1, but I don't feel it is worth the money in my application.

No gain over oem Motorcraft or AC Delco, imho.

To whom it concerns...I just bought Mobil I filters for $3.oo each! From Advance Autoparts on line! I have a classic 1974 AMC Hornet 6 cyl. that takes an AC pf-24[Mobil 1=203] I don't understand the low price for this filter as all other M1 filters for other applications are $11.99? SAY? Advance Auto Parts- AMC M1 oil filters

They are a Champion filter, similar to Supertech or some AC. So construction will be the same as the others, although I think that they use a Silicone ADBV. They are a good filter, but a bit pricey.

The complaint about these filter is that while they filter well they are restrictive. Do a search of this section and you will find they have been discussed many times.

Hmm it says $3 for my car, but it only says Mobil on the link you gave and M1 if you click on it. I wonder if this is a Mobil 1 filter or just a plain Mobil filter. Have you ever ordered one from this site?

I don't know about in this case, but I ordered a dozen Mobil 1 filters at $3 from them a few months ago. Thought I had a deal -- closeout, or something. I received an eMail the next day reporting that they were not available.
No; I didn't get them.

I can't even find mobile 1 filters there for my car... they don't have squat listed for '04s, and nothing worth buying for the '02s and '03s.

In a pinch you could buy them online. You didn't say what car you have but if the engine hasn't changed, a filter for an '02 or '03 will probably work fine. Check with the counter guy, he can punch it up on the computer. Or go to a NAPA store where you pretty much have to deal with the counter guy and get a NAPA Gold, which I regard as nearly as good as the Mobil 1 filter. Often the filter catalogs on the counter are a year or two out of date, or like my local K-Mart they don't have one at all.

We are talking AMC here, maybe they just want to get rid of them.

The Mobil 1 filters have 3 layers of filter media and are much less of a compromise than most other filters. Other filters that have more than one layer are Pureolator Pure One and Amsoil SDF.

While Champion makes them they make them to the spec that Mobil requires. Other filters that Champion makes are made to other specs.

GO NOW to your local murrays discount and get a 6qt case of Mobil 1 oil for about 27.89, and get a free mobil 1 oil filter.

As others have pointed out, they're good filters but not worth the steep price. At one time they may have been unique in their overall package, but others now match Mobil 1 at half the price. PureOne and Baldwin (just to name two) offer very fine filtration as well, Mobil 1's claim to fame. M-1's do have thick cans (0.0175" thick sheet metal), comparable to K&N. But this is of no great significance unless your filter is unusually exposed to road debris.

Most significantly, one doesn't necessarily get a large filtration area with Mobil 1. In the recent Overboost.com test of Honda filters, Mobil 1 came in 7 out of 9 in terms of area. Only the Bosch and Fram had LESS area. The OEM Honda filter had 121 sq in, while M-1 had 99 sq in...yet M-1 was TWICE as expensive. It's clear to me that, at $12/filter, Mobil 1 is selling their past reputation, rather than any current benefits one will realize at this steep price. These filters are Lincolns masquerading as Mercedes. Nice filters...but very overpriced.

TC - I'd look at the SAE806 tests rather than filter area. Given that the M1 filter has multiple layers that catch different size particles I don't see how you can compare its filter area to other filters that have only a single layer of filter media.

I've never heard of the Mobil 1 media described as a "depth" media in any of the surveys or literature, certainly nothing like the Fleetguard StrataPore. In fact, it visually looks identical to the K&N media, which is pretty ordinary (per the SHO website filter site). Having a fine-filtering media is of no great help if it is small in total area -- high restriction and small area make for a undesirable mix, possibly giving the bypass valve a good, extended workout.
