So I bought 3 bottles of Mobil 1 75W-140 and put them in the rear diff of our truck. When I was cleaning up, I noticed one of the bottles had a 75W-90 label on the back (75W-140 on the front).

I called the Mobil this morning to explain the situation and the guy acted like I was lying to him. He kept asking where on the the back label it said 75W-90, like in paragraph on the bottle or what. I told him "In blue it says SAE 75W-90". He still didn't seem like he believed me and asked me to e-mail him a picture of the bottle and they'd get back to me.

I waited all day and never heard back so I contacted them again around 6pm and that guy told me the department I e-mailed them to was probably closed. So I asked him what department that e-mail address was for, and he told me he didn't know. Then I asked him if it was in fact 75W-90, if it would cause a problem in the immediate future. Again, he said he didn't know.

They've been less than helpful so far.

So does anyone know if mixing two viscosities like this would cause a problem?

Do I really need to drain everything out and start over?

I bought some Syntec for an oil change years ago. When I got finished I noticed one of the bottles said 10W30 on the front and 5W30 on the back. From then on,I always check all labels before I buy.

This reminds me of when a penny get stuck in the gears at the mint and get restamped all funny.

I highly doubt the mixed fluids will be any issue at all. You just end up with a viscosity somewhere between the two, which in
all probability will work just fine unless your vehicle is doing a lot of extremely heavy towing.

You should push this issue with Mobil. Be more assertive with the phone people....get their name before you go into detail on the issue. Ask him if the line is monitored and/or recorded....that usually wakes them up....then ask directly for his supervisor. If still no response, tell him you are going to write the main Exxon-Mobil corporate office for help and ask for his boss's name and the address of his office so you can send them a copy of the letter going to corporate! That will usually get their attention. There is also a real possibility that he is just some phone center contractor who repeats "canned info" and doesn't even work for Exxon-Mobil.

+1 It is the principle of the matter that even makes me upset! Don't just let this go, yes the fluid is OK and will work but this lousy customer service cannot be accepted. They act like their you know what don't stink. I would try to get their attention somehow. All gear oil I use or recommend is Amsoil, they have good customer service, they speak English and the call center is not in Mumbai. Sorry this has happened to you. I am trying to phase my lube sources to smaller US businesses not only "to do my patriotic duty" but to try to let these huge conglomerates know they are not the only ones. If more of us do that MAYBE they will treat their customers a little better. I am changing my Civic Hybrid to Amsoil 0w20 this weekend.

Your pictures are as tricky to receive as the info you are trying to get from Mobil tech.

Amsoil receives their share of complaints as well. Amsoil is a fine company, "but your patriotic duty"? Seems a little over the top, but Mobil tech has mostly been very helpful to me in the past.

I just bought 5 quarts of RP 20W50 and their new labeling sais "MADE IN USA" on the front of the label. Makes me feel even better about buying it. The bottles even say "Made in Schulenburg,Tx" on them. Their customer service is beyond top notch as well.

Right on chubbs1!
