Noticing that M1 is getting hard to find. All the shelves are cleaned out here in So. CA. Anyway, tonight went to a store I never go to and there was a sign explaining that exxon/mobil are having supply problems due to a hurricane.

Have you all seen similar supply problems around the country? I really need another quart of 0w30 and cant find it!

Here in Kansas I saw the same sign.

I really think you need to consider another brand of oil, at least temporarily.

Don't sweat it. Use Dino. For the same 5000 mile OCI, there's no difference. If you MUST use synthetic for a LONG (and reasonable OCI, 10K), use Pennzoil Platinum. Use any of the synthetics, but if you use the synthetics, run them long, or you're wasting. If you're running a turbo or super high-pop engine, that's another story, but for stock blocks, short OCI, Dino. Long OCI, Syn.

Run those filters twice, too. Such a waste to change these things every 5K.

I read this post on BITOG from a few days ago:

Talked to a guy today at Walmart and he said that Mobil was in the middle of some big lawsuit from Hurricane Ike. That was the reason he gave me for the extremely low stock of M1. He said they haven't been getting much and won't be for awhile. So, I opted for the Castrol Syntec 5w-20 hoping it would be a good option. Anyone have any knowledge of this oil? I used it 10 years ago in my Jeep when it was only available in 15w-50. Seemed to work pretty well. I wasn't doing extended drains at the time, but, whatever.

Anyway, toocrazy is CRAZY! You're the first I heard to run filters twice. My understanding is that synthetic can go extended drain intervals but your pushing it if you let the filter go beyond 5-7k miles.

Heres another site that gives much more detail:

I have over-sized filter in '94 LS400, and it is changed only on second oil change for conventional at 6-7k OCI's or at every oil change for synthetic at 10-12k. Same for '04 S2000, filter is changed once a year and conventional oil is changed every 6 months.

Walmart is very low on M1, but Kragen and Autozone have plenty M1 in stock but their price is a little higher.

SOme of the highend filters like Mobil 1, AMSoil, Wix, ect can go to 10,000 miles.
I change mine out at 5-6K miles, but it can be done. No worries

You can get 5qts of Valvoline Synpower at Walmart for $19 which is probably the cheapest price for a name brand synthetic right now since Pennzoil Platinum went up in price. Factor in a $10 rebate and it should be an easy decision.

My walmart only had about 4 jugs of Mobil 1 10w30 for $26/ea and some EP. Plenty of conventional 5000 at $11/jug!

While I agree that an oil filter can last the extended drain, I disagree with using a filter twice. Why contaminate new oil with up to a quart of old/dirty oil. I mean, it's not much more work on most cars and you're getting dirty anyway if you drain oil at the pan.

I wonder where the west coast distribution center is located. Yes here in North Cali, shelves are empty, so instead of driving around, I will have to switch to another brand.

Over TH. when I was down in SO Cali, Wallmarts in Porter Ranch, Santa Clarita and Simi were all low or almost out of oil

Walmart has several distribution centers in California. There is one near Red Bluff, dunno where the rest are.

Now about the fiter... You do know that Honda has it in their manual to change the filter EVERY OTHER oil change?

And they go upwards to 10k per oci.

I think Honda is known for long lasting motors so I'd not be concerned with a 5k OCI x 2 per filter.

Take care, Bill
