My old man just purchased a 2004 Mustang GT Convertible. It has 23,000 miles on the clock. The engine is clean and quiet. The car will be driven roughly 6000-9000 miles per year. He wants to run Mobil 1 5w20 at 6000 mile OCI, with a Motorcraft oil filter. When the car is driven it usually reaches operating temperature. The car is under warranty until May 2007. Will Mobil 1 work or should he step up and use a better oil?

No problem. Although in my humble opinion a once per year oil change should have an oil analysis just in case a coolant leak is presentl.

What is the OCI specified in the owner's manual? If it's less than 6k miles, I'd stick with what the owner's manual calls for, until it's out of warranty. Then, like Al, I'd suggest a UOA, just to make sure things are all buttoned up.

Ford's specified oil change interval. I would stick to that until it is out of warranty just so there will be no excuse to deny an engine related warranty claim.

Once out of warranty, you could easily do a once a year oil change with Mobil 1 5W20.

The Car doesn't have an owners manual. Apparently the previous owner "Misplaced" it.

I believe the Ford recommended OCI for a 2004 Mustang is 5000 miles.

Patman,
Is this recommendation for synthetic or dino? 5000miles is Normal service?

I believe Ford simply gives that one recommendation, and doesn't differentiate between severe or normal service. At least that is what I have gathered from the quick search I did this afternoon on the Mustang message boards. Someone with a Mustang will hopefully confirm what I posted.

And that recommendation from Ford would be for conventional oil (although I do believe the 5w20 sold at Ford dealers is a blend)

I know Mobil 1 works well in Honda and Toyota engines. But, will Mobil 1 5w20 work in a 260HP V8 Mustang engine?
dunno.gif

Sorry about that. I ment to include that Ford's normal oil change interval is 5,000 miles and the severe service interval is 3,000 miles. Also, Ford's current definition of "severe service" is no longer worded so that most everything fits that catagory. Ford's been pushing their dealers to recommend the 5k service interval instead of the 3k interval.

Like I said, it would be wise to stick to the 5k interval until it is out of warranty.

Well M1 5W20 works great in a 345hp Dodge Hemi 5.7L v8. Don't see why it wouldn't work in a Ford V8.

I am concerned about the long-term effect of using Mobil 1. A deal breaker would be oil consumption.

My how times have changed!! Just a few years ago the long term effects of using Mobil 1 oil was highly desireable. Now we worry about consumption as the miles pile up.

Not dissing anyone but since this GRP III / Mobil 1 thing got started the products Mobil produces seem to be under a lot of suspicion. Cheers all! DV

Why waste money for M1 5w20 when you can get Pennzoil Platinum, Castrol Syntec, fill in your favorite brand synthetic 5w20 for less money and they are all made with the same "high quality synthetic fluids" as M1?

Ford's general service is 5,000 miles, severe service is 3,000 miles. If you decide to go longer, keep a close eye on the oil level.

I agree! With the killer deals on Pennzoil Platinum these days, along with the fact that it's got the Terry Dyson seal of approval, it seems to be one of the best choices in off the shelf synthetics.

Gee Patman, are you going to switch from GC to PP?

I do not think this was mentioned, the recommended oil for your Mustang is 5W20 Syn Blend & the suggestion is Motorcraft (Conoco/Phillips). In some of the graphs on the AMSOIL site the MC oil shows as a very good. M1 should in theory be better. Drink a couple less six packs a year and change the oil twice a year if driving the distances you claim for when you do drive it your foot will be in it.
