Mobil 1 Filter Damaged In Store (Plus Fram XG3614 C & P)

So I was in Wal-Mart to grab a filter and oil, and I noticed that this Mobil 1 M1-102A has a damaged bypass valve. Looks to be a quality control issue since it's unimaginable that this happened during shipping.

Anyway I also cut open my old Fram XG3614 to take a peek, everything looks good to me. Been run about forty days, just over five thousand miles on it. Replaced with a Mobil 1 M1-102A (Not the one in the pic though).

M&H quality control at it's finest.

This is why I stick to OEM or FRAM Endurance.

I generally agree, although my once-revered Motorcraft has lost some of its appeal. My second choice was WIX/NAPA Gold, but now that M&H have put the boot in, I don't know what I'm going to use once my stash of FL820S filters is depleted.

I'm hearing some love for Premium Guard here...

What's the country of origin? Crazy how many defective filters are making it to the shelves.
Both filters in the OP are made here in the U.S.A.

After this OCI I'm probably going back to the Fram, it's a few bucks cheaper than the M1 and seems to be a fine filter.

You probably shoulda just made 2 different posts. This makes it seem like you’re just trying to stir the bee’s nest.
As far as the bypass valve goes, it somehow got bent over. Either someone stuck something in there and damaged it or it was bent during assembly.
The fram ultra looks fine here.

I'm sorry if it came across that way, it was certainly not my intention. I don't have a foot in either the Mobil 1 or Fram camp, just posting my experience from my most recent oil change. I'm not sure that posting two threads back-to-back would not have been read exactly the same way by those who chose to, and I didn't want to clutter the forum with more threads than necessary.

The filter I bought was a Mobil 1, but after changing oil and cutting open the Fram I'll probably go back to Fram due to it being cheaper. Or I'll try a Super Tech. The Mobil 1 that I'm using now will receive a C&P when it gets swapped out.

Any of those filters should be good IMO. Good pics by the way.

Is that XG wire backed or not? Doesn't look like it, the pleats are too close together. Did you have a date code for it ... it's on the can if you still have it laying around.

It's sitting in the woodshed at my folks' shop, if it hasn't been disposed of when I go back next week I'll check for the date code.
Does the term "wire backed" mean there's metal in the filter element itself? Or a layer of mesh on the back of the element, basically between the element and the core tube?

Yes, that's how the XG Ultras were built, but they dropped the wire backing quite a while ago when they changed the media design. Did you rip into the media at all?

if wire backed, there will be a metal mesh on the back side of the media following every pleat.

If the filter is still there when I go back I'll give it a rip and find out.

I don't think it's wire backed due to the thinner and closer pleat spacing. But definitely verify. (y) Date code would be good to know regardless. Seems the really wavy examples were built quite awhile ago based on date codes.

Confirmed, no wire backing. The code on the can appears to be A40682, hopefully you guys know how to decode that? It was bought about a month and a half ago.

Current XG media filter looks fine at 5k miles, as one should expect of a 20k rated filter. Fwiw, I wasn't in doubt this one not OG. Pleating appears narrow as opposed to wider with OG. 'In my observation', only been one OG media filter anecdote posted that left some doubt it was such. Pleating appeared narrower than majority OG. Pleating here is straighter than many current media XG anecdotes posted.

Thanks for c&p.
