Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 Too Thick For 5W20 Apps?

Long story short, I ended up with a case of Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 SM oil instead of the 5w-20 from AAP on sale. Engine is a 3.0 Duratec in 2006 Escape. (still under warrenty)

Been using Pennz. Plat. 5w20. Looking at the CST specs the Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 is 47@40' and 8.5@100'. The Mobil is 61@40' and 11@100'.

Is the 5w30 too thick for the Duratec in the winter? Maybe wait till the summer to use it? or waste time and head back to the store and try and exchange it for the 5w-20. (AAP does not stock the EP version of the Mobil 1 5w-20, so it would be regular Mobil 1).

Or just use the Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 and no worries?

How long is your planned OCI with this?

If you are going to go 7.5k+, then I would say it would be fine. It will most likely shear to a 20wt anyway.

I'm running GC (almost 40wt) in my car after a few runs with Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 (way thinner) and all runs fine!

I go w/recommended 7500 miles on changes. Car is under warrenty.
The oil is from AAP, buddy of mine was picking up some up on sale and got the wrong viscosity.

TAKE THE MOBIL 1 5w30 BACK!

If you do a search across the entire board, you'll see all kinds of problems with that oil; anywhere from consumption issues to weird valve train noises. The same problem has been reported with Mobil 1 5W-20 & 10w30. By contrast, their High Mileage 10w30 oil and thicker grades have been fine.

You are fine use what you have!!!! It is not going to hurt a thing! If anyone say's other wise ask them to prove it! We have 5W20 Ford Applications running everything up to 5W40 in the used oil analysis section with no ill effects!

I experience 0 oil consumption, and have never noticed any "strange" sounds using Mobil 1 5w30. Are you speaking of the "EP" specifically?

And to the original poster, I'm sure that you would be fine running the 5w30, but if you can exchange it for the 5w-20 I would.

Your mpg may go down .5 (or less) thats about it. I'm not a M-1 fan any longer. But there's nothing wrong with it other than its overpriced.

Go for it, I have an 05 Tribute with this motor and just bought two jugs of Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30. My warranty just expired and I will be putting this in this spring. Mobil 1 is overpriced but these jugs were on sale for 50% off so for me it's a great deal. I plan on running the oil about 12k kms or more. Then next winter putting in a 5w20.

The Duratec engines originally speced 5-30 until Ford switched across the board to 5-20 to help with their MPG in like 01 or 02. My wife has a 2.5 Duratec in her Cougar and owner's manual calls for 5-30, however it was changed in a TSB when Ford made the switch. I run either 5w20 or 5w30, depending what is on special, and have had no problems.

When you really need the oil thin at very low temps, they will be quite similar - both are 5-X.
