Mobil 1 Extended Drain Oil?

Went to my local Walmart today, and saw a new (to me, at least) Mobil 1 oil, in all grades, 5w30 through 15w-50, labeled Extended Guard. Guarenteed for 15000 miles or 1 year. Is this some new formulation or just a relabel of the regular M1? the bottle is shaped different, and some yellow is added to the label. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I think this is a little better oil than regular SL grade mobil 1 most have been using. It is also better than the new SM grade Mobil 1 which is also new. Used oil analysis will tell us how good as the reports come in on it.

I think it is indeed different. The 5w30 and 10w30 isint energy conserving when I looked at the rear label on the bottles, while the regular Mobil 1 of the same 2 grades are. One thing I dont like is the lack of an acea A3 rating that I feel they should have. After all, the gc 0w30 is acea a3 rated.

I'm seriously considering the Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10W40 for my VW, after my stash of yet-to-be-tried GC dries up. My VW calls for a 5W40 for all climates, but since I live in Alabama, how could I go wrong with a 15k mile guaranteed Mobil 1 Synthetic 10w40?

FWIW, I'd probably drain it at 10k miles

The consideration is much more than just viscosity. You also need an oil formulated to meet VW's specs for your turbocharged engine. The 5W-40 oil will be rated for VW502.00 or some such spec. 10W-40 is no where near as good an oil, not because of the viscosity but because of the formulation.

Mobil 1 0W-40 will work well. Kendall or 76 5W-40 will do the job. Schaeffer's new #9000 5W-40 would be an excellent choice. Look for other oils that meet that VW spec detailed in your owner's manual.

How do we know its not as good? Isn't it a brand new weight of oil from M1?

Actually, the new Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w40 meets more of the spec's. in my VW owner's manual than the Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 or 10w30.

My owner's maual says for all temps. & all climates, use a 5w40, or 5w30 if 5w40 is not avaliable (or an oil that is appropriate for the climate in which the car is driven) & that the oil should meet the following standards, either singly or in combination:
API SL
ACEA A2/A3
VW 502.00

The new EP 10w40 & 15w50 meet API SL & ACEA A3

The new EP 5w30 & 10w30 meet API SL & ACEA A1

So, since I don't think I need the 15w50, the Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w40 seemed like a good fit. With all that said, I can probably easily go 10k on the Mobil 1 0w40 I'm currently using or with the GC that's sitting in wait.
