Mobil 1 compared to other oils

If I may add a constructive question to this whole discussion over Mobil 1 vs everyone else in the Seq IVA test. . .

We have read recently that some oils may be moving towards giving up more chemical wear as opposed to traditional friction-based wear. If this is the case that would cause higher concentrations of iron in used oil analysis that have been documented with Mobil 1. What I can't recall is if Valvoline specifically mentioned microns of wear in their results or if it was an indirect reference with the UOA numbers mentioned in the release. Thoughts?

It was microns and it was failing the test, but we don't know why. It may have had to do with a supply disruption from Ike. Regardless, it meets the spec now because the API confirmed that Mobil 1 submitted their data to prove it passes the test. The API also was not sure why Ashland did what they did.

It is, for the most part, much ado about nothing. It was merely a "gotcha!" action. Target of opportunity.

Now if the fanboys will quit shoveling coal into the denial train fire box ...this thread can die and fade into history.

I still see at least 3 more pages. Concede to the obvious ..and nothing more. Don't defend an indefensible position by attempting to move it somewhere else and tether it to more favorable truths. Take the hit and then there's nowhere to go with it. The bomb has long ago exploded.

There is really nothing else that can be said on this topic, even though I just said something.

Ashland claims to have run multiple Seq IV tests at two certified labs over two years, and all failed. Large companies like Ashland and Castrol do not make statements like this lightly - you can be sure all of the data and choice of words have been thoroughly reviewed by their lawyers and top management. Based on this and XOMs silence I believe there was a problem of some sort, but we will probably never know the details, timeframe, or what went on behind the scenes with the API.

Valvoline has removed the 4X better wear claim from their Synpower label, but it persists on their website. Nonetheless, I do not believe this is significant to my engine and driving patterns and I continue to use M1 products, although admitedly not the 5w30.

Good move Helen! A challenge to an outright fist fight is absolutely unacceptable here. Thanks for keeping this site professional and respectable.
