I just installed 3 quarts of Mobil 1 AP 0w-20 in the Mirage with the M1-110A filter. I will be running for 2 normal intervals so it will be the equivalent of 2 $23 oil changes. I took it for a short drive last night. I originally stopped using M1 EP due to it making my engine louder than PUP. During my short drive last night this oil was actually quite right than PUP although the PUP had been in for 6 months. I will report back on MPG if we get a day that isn't ridiculously windy.

Funny, I thought all the stuff about M1 being noisy was totally mythological until I switched from M1 5W30 to 5W30 EP and did, in fact, feel that my car was noisier. Had never run PUP (or PP), but had used QSUD and M1 ESP in 5W30 plus whatever the local dealer used for the first few changes.

I can do one if you want but I usualy only drive 3 to 4 thousand miles every six months. It will probably be about 7k next year.

For my Mitsubishis, it wasn't so much normal driving was nosier but if you got on the throttle while it was cold it would let out a death squeal that I can only equate to when you drive a HMMWV down the highway and the cooling fan kicks on. Neither the Lancer or Mirage ever squealed with PUP or Castrol Extended Performance. (Cold is anything below freezing) It was 23 out this morning and about 5 min after coming out of my driveway I had her cranking 6k RPM and no squeal. I'm happy so far.

I have found on 2 different engines that M1 quiets down after a few thousand miles. Maybe the "dirt" insulates..

Noticed the same thing. I thought maybe it just took a little while for the anti-wear additives and moly in the Mobil 1 to plate the valvetrain?

Good thought njohnson,

I think it is the oil 'loosening' up since it is in it for the duration of 15,000 miles. If just doesnt have much give when new since it is going to last for such high miles.

While a 5000 mile oil would probably behave much different.

Well, since in all my decades of M1 - never had this noise thing - I took readings on PUP before draining (5k) at 73 Db and the fresh M1 EP at 71 Db ... I will keep doing this so that new vs new and old vs old can be compared ...

Same here. In 39 years of using M1 oils I have never had an engine that was what I thought noisy. But I only use M1 from day one.

Yeah, I believe the noise that really caught my ear came when the car was not fully warm and I would give it a little gas to hit a gap in traffic or whatever (not going WOT with a cold car, of course) and then ease off suddenly, maybe because the car in front of me slowed down unexpectedly...I heard a pronounced rattle with the EP that I had never heard before and it really made me uncomfortable. Same filter as always and the oil was basically right on the full line.
Didn't use the EP in my last change and I haven't noticed the noise...could have been totally unrelated to the oil, of course, but it was definitely different from what I was used to and not a particularly subtle thing. Sort of like when I tried M1 5W30 ESP and thought my car was having a coolant issue because my oil temp monitor was reading up to 10F higher than "normal" (I always have oil temp on my programmable readout)...some folks on here helped me realize that was totally normal with a higher HTHS oil and I learned to not worry about that one.
