What is the difference between Mobil 1® Extended Performance and the currently available Mobil 1?

Mobil 1 Extended Performance formulas are designed specifically for today's longer service intervals and are guaranteed to protect for up to 15,000 miles or one year.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance has a unique formulation with boosted level of protection and performance. These formulations with the Advanced SuperSyn System contain 50 percent more SuperSyn, 36 percent more anti-wear additives, and 37 percent more cleaning agents than the current Mobil 1.

36% more anti-wear, 37% more cleaning and 50% more SuperSyn.....

FWIW...Regular M1 is now $19.97 for a 5 quart container at the local Wal-Mart. M1 EP is $23.82 for the same 5 quart container ($4.76/quart). Either Wal-Mart is selling it at a low price or ExxonMobil is being very aggressive with their pricing.

Based on the numbers, is there any good reason not to select and use M1 10W-30 over M1 5W-30 since the flow characteristics are very close?

Your new vehicle warranty!

If it does not include 10W & once that expires, I would switch to it if I lived in Florida temps.

From a volatility aspect, the M1 10W-30 will have more of the heavier viscosity base oils and is a good choice for warm summer temps.

For GF-4, the Noack volatility, evaporative loss rate must be 15% or less.

Typically, for synthetics, a 5W will run 12-14% Noack, a 10W will be 8-10% and Amsoil probably even posts some slightly better numbers.

Playing with different inputs on mobil's online oil selector for my vehicle:

above 0f 10w30, below 0f 5w/30

on warranty reg M1, off warranty M1 extended

wonder about the off warranty m1 ep? it meets all the specs in my manual? do they assume you will exceed the book oci when using it? could all those extra adds pollute the cat and 02 sensor, isn't this why the reduced levels of these adds in SM GF4 ?

As a follow up to Blue99: I drive an 02 honda civic. I use 5W-30 M1 (regular, not EP), run 10,000 or one year and don't use or burn a drop. So, 10W-30 shouldn't really give me any gains in the volatility dept. I was maninly looking for higher extended drains, and since the cSt @40C and 100C are so close between 5W-30 and 10W-30 M1, but the 10W-30 meets ACEA A5/B5 and 5W-30 doesn't, I figured the 10W-30 could go longer drains, no?

This is my understanding as well.

Like many cars, my M3 has an expensive cat (something like $1400) and I've never replaced one on any car I've ever owned. I wouldn't want to shorten it's lifetime unnecessarily...

I ran Mobil 1 0w40 (and most of the other products 0w30, 5w30, 10w30, and even 20w50) for a large part of the life of my 98 H22A4 engine. The cat made it to 130+k without an issue...

I wast burning between 1 and 3 qts of oil between oil changes.

So if you are not burning tons of oil, and possilby, even if you are, you've got little to worry about.

regular M1 at Wal-Mart is now over $20 for 5qts anf $25.03 for 5qts of EP. In a few months they will have one of their 'rollbacks' and put the prices back to what they were.
