I do believe all of you who recommended the M1 AFE, but I would just feel better with the protection of the RP. I also will be adding a magnetic drain plug from drainplugmagnets.com so hopefully this will also prolong engine life and performance. Thanks again!

For a 5k OCI, I feel that the Mobil 1 AFE 0W-20 would protect just as well as the RP 0W-20; if it were me and I wanted to run a 5k OCI, I'd save my self some money and run the Mobil 1 AFE, which I have shown to be generally less expensive than RP when on sale.

As far as the oil filter choice, the K&N filter is good, but expensive when not on sale. First line of defense in preventing extra insolubles in the oil [other than engine metal wear] is a great air filter; the stock paper/fiber one should be good to filter, anything that gets past the air filter should be then filtered by the oil filter. This is the simplest way of thinking about it.

I would certainly love to hear about it! I'm tired of sending a pump a month away for rebuild.

If there is one thing anybody can take away from this thread this is my nomination as to the truth. Synthetics and may I add conventional oils are way better than needed in MOST applications!

And Steve, if you are wearing out nice trucks than we both know you are using the wrong oil. I kid I kid!

@OVERK1LL's last couple of sentences:

While some of the certs and approvals may not be all that meaningful, I think with some of the high-end certs and approvals (again, see M1 0w40), you ARE being given a guarantee of performance.

But it only DEFINITIVELY says something about THAT oil in regards to itself alone. Pro/+1 for that oil...The end. lol

But this kinda is the topic

Either oil is going to work just fine in this application. But that's been stated a gazillion times at this point.

Yeah, but that just shows folks passion and stupid(sorry but we are lol) emo reactions(a harsh way of saying illogical emotionally charged over-corrective responses, sorta like spock vs jim on star trek?). It's gonna get overly discussed and that's that.

Sometimes folks with lots of experience etc need a smack to calm down and sometimes just gotta keep ego in check, we all do. We all have some particular favorite oils. Heck, if I had an app to use M1 0w-40 in I probably would, but alas the civic seems happy with 30 multi-grade.

what is the pump model and make you are using and how much oil does it take ?
what oil are you using and what is the drain interval ?
Is there any cavitation issue with the pumps ?
Are the bearing doing well and just the gear assembly is giving trouble, or are there multiple mechanical issues ?

These should narrow down to whom I must talk to, so please help.

As for the original question.
My opinion is the both the RP and M1 0W-20 oils will serve you VERY well.
I think that the M1 0W-20 will be better in COLD weather......will not be as thick when it is really cold outside.
That is not to say that the RP will be bad, just that the M1 will be better in that specific situation.
That said, all motor oil will be too thick when it is real cold outside.....

As for "Race Oil".....True Racing oil is NOT approriate for street use.
Race oil is not left in the engine for the length of time that "street" oil is.
Race and Street are 2 completely different applications, with different type oils for each.

Many folks have brand loyalties, but the fact is......and I don't use either brand in question (I have used M1 in the past) but I would be fully confident with either one in my own vehicle.

A in-depth evaluation of both of the oils in question (RP vs M1) will likely see 1 better in some ways and the other better in other ways.
AGAIN, I think BOTH are great oils for your application.
I won't add further confusion by mentioning other brands (and there are other very good brands).....you are doing well to be down to 2 quality choices to pick from.

To the OP. Honda is recommending that you leave the factory fill in their 9th gen motors until the oil life monitor reads about 15%. The reasoning is that the factory fill is a special blend with a high moly content to assist with proper break in of the motor. If you change it out earier, you should replace it with another high moly 0w-20 oil. I've seen this recommendation on several different Civic forums. Oh [censored]. I just realize this thread is a year old. My Stupid. Mods, feel free to remove it.
