A number of synthetic oils claim to address sludge and generic deposits clean up . Engine varnish and carbon deposits on pistons , rings and elsewhere are much more of a cleaning challenge with Valvoline R&P and possibly HPL oils leading the way currently in cleaning ability… Would love to see Mobil offer similar !

Funny, but every Mobil 1 oil I've used with any amount of PAO in it has kept my engines sparkling clean. So in my mind, it is strictly a marketing issue. Good on Valvoline.

Out of curiosity, does Valvoline R&P contain any PAO? If not, what is in it that is doing all the cleaning?

I'm currently running Mobil 1 EP 0w20 in my Jeeps and it is still showing, IIRC less than or equal to 30% PAO, which is down from its older formulation, but still substantial, in my estimation.

Mobil 1 did not clean ring lands on problematic engines, so no, not just marketing. Maybe a chance find, or idea that came into a oil chemist thought in the middle of the night that fixes an issue a good chunk of engines have world wide.
