Mobil 1 "Advanced Clean" 5w-30

I see Mobil had to one up Valvoline. This one states "Cleans.. in one oil change" Valvoline Restore and Protect takes 4 OCs.
It taking 4 oil changes is actually good for the owner. If the oil gets too dirty too fast, your OCI would be extremely short, and filters would be overwhelmed immediately.

Specifically cleans what in one oil change ??
*If it doesn’t specifically mention pistons and rings - then it is just marketing fluff . I like Mobil 1 oils but unless Mobil is more specific about cleaning then it will be the oil I possibly move to only AFTER 4 OCI’s with Valvoline Restore and Protect .

Yeah i see your point.

I think Mobil 1 has been too much profit maximization at the expense of quality recently. I hope this is not a mere marketing play as you are suspecting

If you want to be sure there's no hard carbon in your rings, Restore and Protect is great. Mobil 1 isn't claiming ring cleaning.
People keep convoluting this isn't that and x does ----, but y does ----.
They arent' the same thing and the manufacturers don't make same claims or give the same directions.
Chiquita Bananas don't make good apple pies, but Chiquita doesn't claim what Granny Smith does either. Want apple pie, buy apples. Want banana pudding, buy bananas.

I don’t know about apples 🍏 or peaches 🍑 or whatever but I do know the new API SQ spec focused on Piston Ring cleanness so there’s really no need for Valvoline Restore and Protect now 😕😕

No it doesn't. All API specs among other specs have always had a ring deposit minimum. For SQ it's barely moved from 4.2 to 4.6 (Weighted Piston Deposit AVG). This is deposit PREVENTION not cleaning. And API SQ is not a high bar to pass.

Agree. If someone wants to look at a stringent cert for piston cleanliness, that would be Porsche A40, which requires zero visible piston ring deposits to pass, not API which allows them in small amounts.

Where does this keep coming from? NO, IT DOES NOT. It contains Sequence IIIH, the same as previous API sequences like SP and SN.

API SQ-RC Sequence IIIH - ASTM D8111: Kinematic viscosity increase, Average Weighted piston deposits, Average Hot stuck rings

0W-8/0W-12:
Viscosity increase (max): 150%
Weighted piston deposits (Merits): 3.7 min
Stuck rings: none

0W-16:
Viscosity increase (max): 100%
Weighted piston deposits (Merits): 4.2 min
Stuck rings: none

All other grades:
Viscosity increase (max): 100%
Weighted piston deposits (Merits): 4.6 min
Stuck rings: none

@buster has posted a picture, I believe from AMSOIL of what 7.7 merits looks like, to give you an idea of how far from "clean" 4.6 is.
