I have been wanting to try the Mobil 1 5w40 in my Porsche as the 15W50 seemed too thick, but I was concerned about running the 0W40 on an older engine. I have the 0W40 in it now, and it did seem to exhibit some signs of slight oil pressure loss on acceleration making me think that the bearings are a little loose for that oil. So I tried yet again to buy some 5W40 (T&SUV) and failed miserably. However, I was pleasantly surprised that the local Wally World at which I'd previously spotted the 5W40 (yes, I drove about 20 miles out of my way to buy oil. Does that make me sick?) did stock Rotella T 5w40 synthetic, so I bought two gallons.

Did I just save 10 bucks or make a mistake? I've never used the Rotella before because I've only ever been able to find the non-synthetic (and I run syn. in the Porsche because it doesn't leak) Just curious how the two oils stack up; the whole reason I was interested in the T&SUV was because I'd heard that it was pretty close to a synthetic HDEO.

Oh yeah, Wally World didn't have any Mobil 1 15W50 either. There were spaces on the shelf for both of them. Is everyone else seeing this (Katrina?) or do my local shopping options just suck?

You should've held out for the Mobil 1 5W40 or tried another Walmart. The Shell is a good oil and you're not going to hurt anything by running it. I used the Shell 5W40 for over a year in my wife's Jetta and just recently swapped it over to the Mobil 1 5W40. The rumor is is that the Mobil 1 Truck and Suv is the same exact oil as the "big rig" Mobil Delvac 1 oil.

Edit-Your Walmart is just lame or you have fellow BITOG'ers shopping there and they're beating you to the good stuff. My Walmart is always fully stocked with everything. Let me know what you need and I'll send some to ya.

Rumor has it(and the VOAs are close) that T&SUV is rebadged Delvac sythetic. I believe it has esters in its base oil. Although Rotella is good oil...I would find some T&SUV and return the Rotella for credit !!

According to some UOA's I've seen the Shell Rotella synthetic 5w-40 performs excellent and I have seen Terry Dyson post that it performs excellent too. I'd personally choose it over the T&SUV in which I do NOT believe is the same as Delvac-1. All my opinion of course.

RTS is a great oil. You just get more expensive process chemistry for the buck with T&SUV ..for a mere $0.50-$0.60 a quart more.

Years ago when I was researching oils for my 2003 VW Jetta TDI, two of the oils (among others) happened to be Rotella T syn and Delvac One 5w40. Very attractively, Rotella T syn is cheaper.

At the time, Mobil One Truck & SUV was not marketed at all and obviously not available on the market, let alone at WalMart. Finding Delvac One 5w40 was almost literally like looking for a needle in a haystack! So now it is good to see WalMart carry one of my fav brews in 5qt jugs, AND at 4 per quart and quart containers. Life is good!! I run 25,000 mile OCI's. While Rotella T syn is a GREAT oil product, I would not even think of running it the same way.

While this item is neither here or there, I have read the Shell Rotella products tend to "stink" near the time one is looking to do an OCI.

So I would recommend running Rotella T syn (I would have no qualms running a 10,000 mile OCI) and running the Mobil One Truck & Suv and see how you like either/or and/or both!? They even can be mixed!! (I would not do this)

So I am using Mobil One Truck & Suv 5w40, and/or Delvac One 5w40, both separately, interchangeably and mixed.

Sorry for hijacking the thread guys, but I have a related question for you.

I am using M1EP 5W-30 in my 4.0L SOHC V6 Ford Explorer at the moment. I will change it this first time at 7500 miles but plan to run it possibly to 10,000 miles next time around. But, after reading this (and other) threads, I am beginning to wonder if I should switch over to Delvac or Truck & SUV 5W-40 next oil change - which is probably this month.

Do you guy’s think I can do a lot better with the Truck & SUV 5W-40 mix next time (or Delvac) or is the M1EP 5W-30 the best?

Oh yeah, my Explorer is a 2002 4x4 with 83,000 miles on the clock.

Thanks! - Brad

Oldwolf, I've debated the same thing about using T&SUV in my Ranger or just sticking with M1 5w30. If it is true that T&SUV is the same thing as D1, then I would use it for it's additive packs, not just something that is thicker at operating temp. I'm sure you'll be fine with it. Only a UOA can tell for sure,,,op

I don't know what you mean by "stink", but towards the end of a 5000 mile OCI with the Jetta on Rotella T syn, it would suddenly use about half a quart-just out of the blue. It happened each and every time at around 4500 or so miles, so I'm thinking it was something with the oil. We'll see if the Mobil 1 does it too...so far it's only been in for 700 miles, so I have a ways to go yet.

Oilpan,
I think I’ll try to find the Delvac 1 or M1 T&SUV 5W-40 for my 4.0L SOHC Explorer this weekend. The SOHC is cam chain intensive (three chains drive the cams) and I have been wondering if the thicker oil (I am using M1EP 5W-30 now) may protect it a little better during 7.5k to 10.k OCI’s. These are good engines but over at ford-trucks.com these chains are shown to be a weak link in some samples. Ford recommends 5W-30 year round so I guess the 5W-40 won’t cause any problems.

Delvac 1 can be found at truckstops. Mobil 1 Truck and SUV can be found at Murray's and Walmart.

The 5W40 shouldn't be a problem as it never really "gets cold" down in North Carolina.
