Results from 5 quart jug bought at Walmart. Filter was OEM. Not sure what to think about the elevated silicon and not sure if I buy Blackstones theory.

Did not notice jump in MPG.... In fact I feel like I'm getting a bit better mpg with the fill of Shell Dino in the sump now. (I have a lot of the Shell to use up...so far so good)

Anyways...what to think of the silicon level?

PS Blackstone had this as 10W30 rather than 0W30...does that skew the lower totals, the SUS viscosity etc?

What were the previous fills?? I'd say that I agree with Blackwell on the oil add pack. No other indicators of dirt ingression jumped up (i.e. aluminum)...you didn't use any sealants or change any gaskets did you? All and all it looks quite good and you could have extended a couple thousand miles without issue. I like how this samples flashpoint was higher too.

I really can't see how a 0w-30oil can make a really noticeable jump in mpgs over a 5w-30. I would guess a microscopic difference could happen. Run the oil longer. It is syn.

No sealant or gasket changes...original air filter though...think Chevy says change out at 50K

One before this one was Pennz Plat...can't remember others but if you do a search you'll find them

I guess maybe it does make sense on the silicon but still seems high to me

Less mpg when the oil, whatever brand it is,is spent. Noticed an increase in mpg w/ free dealer fill vs. fuel diluted spent M1 EP.

Do not even think about running the OEM airfilter for 50,000 miles!!! They toss salt down like it is mana from heaven every winter her in Michigan. My car get's a new air filter every spring!Between the salt and dust from harvest time plus insects and road debrigh my filters look like c r a p after 12 months of use. $16 a year is nothing . Running a dirty air filter does nothing to improve fuel economy either.

As for the oil it looks ok but I think you would probably get to about 10,000 miles and need to get ride of the oil. I too think that in this applicationthe 0W30 would be spent before you hit 12,000 miles! If you want to go longer try the 10W30 HM or the M1 0W40 these both have better additive packages then the M1 0W30 in my opinion. Really though if you have lots of Shell to use up I would use all that up first! Why buy oil if you already have plenty that needs to be used up?

I'll look into changing the air filter today...not sure where I got the 50K from but yeah..that is excessive lol

Pita to change the filter on a Ecotec

Kind of looks like in your ride the recent M-1 did a better job than the previous PP run. I agree with John. I change air filters out every 6 months because I am around dusty muddy conditions often. The high mileage m-1 would help, but if you have shell dino run to 5000 and do a UOA and compare. Good Luck, Goose

I really do not see where the Mobil 1 did any better than the previous PP run. The PP was run 1,000 more miles, NO consumption, had a higher vis and higher TBN. Actually when you compare the two, I would say they were equal.

I agree with Johnny (about the oil, not his memory....)

In fact, correcting for mileage all the UOAs have been remarkably consistent, especially considering break-in trends.

Have any of these been on conventional?

Are you going to do a UOA on your current fill?

I am very curious to see how conventional would compare with the synthetics you have been using.

This oils seems to be producing just 'slightly' better results that its 5W-30 stablemate...slightly more stable basestocks needed to make the 0W-30 spread? I wonder!

Overall, a good run, but a bit of a waste - on an engine this easy on oil, could have easily gone 10-12k miles, or full OLM...

I did not realize or better yet just plain see that PP was run longer. I am only 42, but the eye sight even with bifocals is not that great. Have a nice anniversary Johnny. My dad said he retired three years ago, but continues to do consulting work for his old company due to the high cost of health insurance and to keep investments at least flat with the terrible stock market.

WOW!!! 6100 miles and still 51% life on the OLM??? GM supposidly calculates this to use dino oil, so it could have realistically taken dino oil to 12K??? Makes me feel better I'm running synthetics when I use the OLM...

blackstone saying that the GLM OLM is not accurate in the comments and to rely on them instead. yeah, more $$$ for them. I would run 10k with confidence in this engine and oil combo. I trust the OLM and I don't even have one!

FYI...Was home over the 4th of July holiday and my parents purchased a new HHR SS. The turbo Ecotec suggests the usage of Mobil 1. In the manual it states that you may find that the OLM to go longer than what you would think but not to go over a year OCI.

I did not know we where compareing the two oils but yes the difference in wear is at the noise level. The flash point though for the M1 was far better. i never have said anything bad though against PP when it comes to wear metal and protecting the engine. I do not think that PP makes HM version though or a 0W40 or anything with an upgraded additive package above and beyound their regular PP so no way to upgrade with PP. So I still think that if you want to get past 10K you will need to try the M1 0W40 or the M1 10W30 HM.
