Just did an oil change on the Cobalt, switching Penn Ultra 5w30 to 0w30 Mobil 1. It's the first time I've ever run a 0 weight oil.

Now the car is happy with it's new choice, but I don't think I've ever heard so much noise from the engine compartment! I know one of the reason is that it is thinner, but can I safely assume that I am going to hear this for a while? Might drive me a little nuts, be not enough to change the oil.

Might even come in handy if it gets much colder this year....

When I had my Tribute, ran 1 fill of M1 AFE 0W-20 during a winter.

Engine started just beautifully in very cold weather; but you could definitely 'hear' the engine more...but the effortless starting below -20C was sooo worth it!

On very cold mornings, you will be happy with your choice.

They're both 30 weight oils. Are you hearing startup clatter from a filter /w bad ADBV?

Agree that the 0w30 AFE is louder than the other 0w30 oil I've run - Amsoil SS 0w30. Best way to tell if it's giving you the service you want is to get a UOA and compare vs other oils.

and

You're going to get plenty of comments both ways, from noise means nothing to I don't care how loud it is, M1 is awesome. Should make good reading.

Nope, same Delco cartridge I always use....

Is it loud when cold hot or both ??

Some engines are very sensistive to a change in the oils viscosity when warmed up. Tends to be less of an issue with a block that is in good condition.

It is just the nature of the beast. The only oils from M1 that will be more quiet are 0w40 and High Mileage versions. Every other viscosity of M1 always makes more engine noise than the competition. I got Magnatec 0w20 in my Scion XB right now, and absolutely love it. Engine is quieter with it than it ever was with Gold Castrol EP 5w20, Maxlife Full Synthetic 0w20, or M1 0w20 AFE.

For me I had the exact opposite experience. Go figure.

Let me fill in for Merk:

"The car isn't happy if it's making noise. Noise is the engine's way of telling you it's not properly lubricated."

With that out of the way, I'd say there's a greater than 50% chance that you may be imagining it. Something about "Mobil 1" and 0w make people hear things. I only say this because I've used Mobil 1 on several occasions/vehicles; even 0w30 AFE in my most recent OCI on my Focus, and I can't get the engine to make the extra noise everyone talks about. I don't seem to burn/use any and I note no ill effects. My vote is for "Use it with confidence".

I think we just had a "M1 = Noise" thread recently that reached about 13 pages?

I'm not happy with a noisy engine either. It's real easy to tell engine noise when you park next to a wall inside a garage and fire up the engine with the windows open. I'd rather have a quieter engine. I changed from AFE 0w30 to PU 5W30, I can't tell a difference in noise, both were quiet. To me a quiet engine is a happy engine, and if I can have a quieter engine w/o bumping up a grade I'm a happy camper.

XOM reduces Phos and Zinc in M1 0W-20 and 0W-30 compared to standard M1 5W-30. So, if an engine is spec''d 5W-30, I don't need a zero weight oil and therefore will not give up the higher additive levels. If I have an oil burner and need to top off between OCs, I'll use 0W-40 because of it's even higher additive loadings.

If I have to use a 0W-20, make mine TGMO.

There is more to lubricity and lubrication than grade at temp.

Severe hydrocracked III and PAO base oils can be noisy stuff.

And yes Magnetec is the quietest stuff since API SL Formula Shell conventional.

The edge gold bottle is noisier than the previous magnetic, but not to the point where I'm (too) worried.

By the way, you can get an API certification PASS on the sequence IVA engine wear test with the allowed wear (90 microns AVERAGED)is considered excessive, IMO.

It's not "thinner" ... at least not thinner (within a narrow range) compared to any other 30-weight oil. It has to meet 30 grade at a summer's day ambient temperature and at elevated temperatures. Only "thin" at below freezing temperatures. Grades are not optional ... you can't grade an oil that meets 20 as a 30 (for example).

I ran M1 AFE in 5W 30 last winter in my Camry V6 and noticed no strange "unhappy" sounds. I kept in for the factory stipulated interval, none was "burned' and it was the same honey color. It probably could have been used longer but I really like the car and don't begrudge it an oil change at the manual specified interval, which is specifically indicated to be for dino OR synthetic.
