Mobil 1 0w-40

Fair enough.

I was curious if you had actual data for your reasoning. I've considered many times if I should switch from M1 0W-40 European Formula to Castrol Edge Euro 0W-40. But at the end of the day, I haven't found any good reason to switch. So I was curious.
For direct injection engines, Castrol would be probably a better fit. M1 0W40 packs a lot of SAPS.

I'm testing the Castrol currently in a GDI 2.0 Turbo to see if there is less oil consumption vs the Mobil 1.

Any difference between these two bottles? Mobil specs the pour point of the new one (left) as -60°C whereas old one (right) states -40°C on the bottle. Wondering if there's a significant reformulation, maybe more GTL base?
Left - new stock. Right - old stock. Possible change in formulation? I believe they're both API SN. Most importantly - still Porsche A40 rated.

Posted the same question on 2 threads by mistake. Here's the info if anyone is interested or has an answer;

I don't understand the inconsistencies in the information Exxon-Mobil provides. From the same page the PDS states -60°C and the MSDS states -42°C.
The -42°C is from the Feb 2022 MSDS.
ASTM D97 test procedure for both.

Do not trust the msds pour points for mobil oils. Some of the mobil 1 lines have the pour point listed as 90 degrees celcius others 0 degrees celcius. Obviously those numbers are false. Trust their pds

So here's a history of my experience with Mobil 0w40:
About a decade ago Mobil was unquestionably to top dog for 0w40. Specifically recommended for my application (R35 GTR) as it was "engineered to work with the special plasma coated cylinder bores". Probably nonsense but it had just about every cert and every manufactures recommendation out there as well as a -54°C pour point as per the bottle.

Next revision the 100°C kinematic viscosity dropped a bit, the pour point was -40°C as per the bottle and for whatever reason Nissan no longer recommended it for the GTR. Motul made a Nismo Spec 0w40 they used instead. Perhaps this is all marketing.

Next revision it lost LL01 (granted arguably an irrelevant point). At that time Castrol began offering German made Euro 0w40, still had LL01 and a pour point of -57°C I believe. Also 100°C kinematic viscosity was a bit higher than the Mobil. So that became my go to for years.

Next Castrol began to make the 0w40 in Belgium, lost LL01 but I still gave it the nod over Mobil.
GTR has been running on a steady diet of my massive stock of German Castrol and will until its gone.
Other turbo cars in the garage have been using up my Belgium Castrol stockpile.

Now the latest Mobil advertised a pour point of -60°C so perhaps we're moving in a positive direction.

Canadian Tire is offering a great deal on the Mobil ($31.99 plus a $10 gift card - Until March 31st) but you'll mostly find they are blowing out the old stock of Mobil 0w40. The NASCAR branded -40°C version. Walmart is beginning to get the new Mobil and I was able to find a Canadian Tire that had the new Mobil in the back and the guy was nice enough to get me only those jugs.

Anyway cold start engine wear in Canadian winters probably the worst thing my motor experiences so I'm all for the new lower pour point.

Love to hear any other opinions about the latest formulation. Property Specs for the new formula attached.

Almost none of what you posted above is relevant. Cold start wear is not the issue, the oil still carries a 0W winter rating and will be pumpable down to a very low temperature, just as any other oil with a 0W rating. Pour point is not the determining factor in "cold start engine wear" anyway.

The loss of BMW Longlife-01 is not necessarily related to performance, and is this an approval you need? You're majoring on a bunch of stuff that isn't really what matters in that oil or any other for that matter.

Well based on the specifications available from Exxon Mobil do you see any noteworthy differences to comment on?

No not really. What you're listing aren't specifications, they are typical values from a PDS. As far as I can see the specifications, approvals and licenses the oil carries is the same except for Longlife-01 which you note is irrelevant to you.

$10 Canadian Tire Gift Cards starting to arrive for my Mobil 0w40 purchases.
Officially the cheapest I've ever got this oil for!
