Back in the college days my car would start at minus 10 F with SAE 30 conventional in the sump. Things got a little dicey at minus 20 F. Why would anyone expect hard starting at 34 F no matter what the oil?

It's Indiana, no one buys 0W-30.
i do about 45 000 kilometers a year and travel to areas where -49 celcius without wind chill is possible. radisson, chibougamau, mistissini, matagami, oujé bougoumou and fermont. i have used this oil since 2016 in all my mazdas. i have currently the newer version of this oil. i c'ant wait to see how it will perform at -43 celcius cold start in radisson and fermont. the coldest i have started with the newer oil is -15 celcius this week and it has started like it was nothing.
I put it in a 78 thunderbird with a 400 and didn’t really notice an increase in fuel economy
the new formulation is not as good as it once was in extreme cold. i am not impressed at all. and this year winter is extremely cold where i live and work. i have no idea what they tried to accomplish with this new formulation for the AFE 0w30. they have ruined it's extreme cold performance. my vehicle struggle to start. the old formulation , i could start in fermont at -43 celcius. they have made a very good 0w30 for summer and mild winter. not extreme winter. i am dissapointed because this oil was a legend in extreme cold.
Mobil 1 0W30 is fine if you don't drive a GDI engine vehicle as the VII's needed to create an oil with such a range (0W30) are on the high side which can lead to GDI intake valve deposits. Unless you are in Minnesota , North Dakota , New Hampshire , etc. I would run a 5W30 synthetic with a GDI Turbo engine for less VII's UNLESS you have port injectors assisting direct injection in each cylinder .
With Mobil 1 ESP 0w30 now being readily available at AAP in 5 quart jugs and individual quarts, in a reasonable oil change combo deal no less, I see no reason to get Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0W30.

I would not hesitate to use it also, but i got some on AAP clearance years ago for $2/qt and it made my Prius sound, in cold weather, like it threw a rod bearing until it warmed up. I ran it 8K miles and then used something else only because i only a 1 OC of the M1. It was a real head scratcher.

That's not accurate, a 0w30 blended with PAO and GTL may use less VII polymer (due to having a heavier base oil blend) than a Group III 5w30.
This Group III + PAO 0w30 has roughly the same additive content as the above DEXOS 5w30:
Yet this 5w30 (Euro spec) has more VII than the 0w-30, even with PAO:

And here we have PAO and Ester blends where there's 7% VII in the 0w30 and only 2.8% in the 5w30:
You can't just assume that a 0w30 is going to have more VII. Oils are blended to a price point and we know the vast majority of 5w30 synthetics we find on the market are Group III based, whereas the MSDS buster just posted shows that Mobil 1 0w30 is based with a blend of PAO, GTL and Group III.
That's a huge improvement in the pour point. It used to be -42C. This looks more like the ESP version, although it is not identical. Are you sure this is for AFE?
