Previous oil changes were:

Castrol GTX 5W-20 and Mobil-1 oil filter every 3,000 miles.

26290 Mobil-1 0W-20 SS changed out with Mobil-1 0W-20 SS and Mobil-1 oil filter. Winter short trips and improperly seated air filter.

29350 Mobil-1 0W-20 SS changed out with Mobil-1 0W-20 SS and Wil oil filter. Air filter changed during this run; Napa Gold.

32456 Mobil-1 5W-30 SS changed out with Mobil-1 5W-30 SS and Motorcraft FL-820S oil filter. NOTE: Do to an error in the manual, on every past oil change 5 quarts of oil had been added...it turns out that the 1st printing of the manual is wrong, and that the new priting details 6 quarts of oil to be used. Therefore, these first 3 analysis' reflect 5 quarts of oil being used, and subsequent analsis' will reflect 6 quarts of oil being used. I'll do 2 more Mobil-1 0W-20 analsis to get a baseline going with 6 quarts vs. 5 quarts, and then I'm going to start switching up the oil.

Blackstone Comments: Nice improvement in iron. It and all the wear metals are now reading at or below average for this type of engine and this is a very good indication of normal wearing parts. The oil was normal in viscosity for a 0W/20 and we found no fuel dilution or anti-freeze. The TBN was okay at 4.5. This is a little lower than the 4.9 we found last time, but still well above our problem level of 1.0. Insolubles were low at 0.4% showing good oil filtration. At 32,456 total miles, we think this engine is doing well. Suggest going to 5,000 miles on the next oil.

Thanks Jay! Yeah, when I got that analysis back, I about cr*pped! I knew there had to be a problem there...turns out the factory air filter had somehow came loose and was just laying in there, letting unfiltered air in...

It was time for a new one anyways, so in went the Napa Gold and all seems well now.

Also, making an edit to the 32456 notation and then I'm calling it a night.

I agree with buster, that iron does seem to be a bit high. Are you gentle with the engine rev's or do you like put your foot into it?

Otherwise, another great report from M1 0w-20. It's a shame to see such a high quality product exit the marketplace.

buster- I've often wondered about that myself...not sure if it indicates wear or if something in Mobil-1 degrades or changes, and that tags as Fe in the labs. With the other numbers as low as they are, why would only the Fe components in the engine wear? I'm just not educated enough about oil or engines to even make a good guess, so until someone does, I'll just keep wondering...

ToyotaNSaturn- See above to buster on Fe wear. It's not even my ride, it's my g/f's. I don't think she puts her foot into it, she bought it because she liked the V-8 sound and wanted a convertible. The day prior to this sample being taken, we took in on a round trip of like 400 somemthing miles...since I drove, it saw a little more sprited driving than usual...but nothing like beating on it. I'll save that for when I get mine!

These numbers are OK but at 3000 mile drain itervals on such a new car just about any oil would perform well.

Are you extending the drain at all. I'd ;ike to see this after 6000 miles.

It is interesting to see the moly content in the M1. I had heard it was i there but did paye much attention.
