Betsy, my American Standard tank-style toilet, is moaning loudly for the first 5 seconds when flushing. I also hear that awful sound about once an hour when the tank is apparently being topped off, which leads me to believe the flapper valve is going. However, what's causing that sound? I doubt it's the flapper valve. Is the fill valve maybe also on its way out? The fill valve is a ca 6 year old HydroClean EZ aftermarket unit. I have never before heard such a sound from a toilet. I have left the lid off the tank and tried running there when I heard the noise, because I thought I would feel a vibration at the source, but I'm too slow. Since I leave this Saturday for my summer vacation, I need to figure out if should fix this now, or if I should just turn off the water supply before I leave and take care of the problem upon my return.

Why worry now, even if you fix it before you leave you'll be concerned...turn the water off to the toilet, while you are at it turn off the water taps to the washing machine as well. Always a good prevention against hoses failing and flooding your home.

I was going to turn the water off anyway before leaving, but if it's really just the fill valve, I can still replace it and return to a properly functioning toilet that doesn't give me shivers in the AM.

The moaning is the ballcock assembly. Replace it; not too difficult nor expensive. The fact that it occurs once per hour indicates you are losing water from your tank somewhere. If the floor around the fixture is dry, it's going into the bowl through the flapper valve.

There are also feed hoses with check valves that will turn themselves off if the hose bursts or a fitting comes loose. I've seen them in Home Depot and think they are a great idea for any structure that will sit vacant for any period of time.

I'm going to replace both, the fill and flapper valve tomorrow. I think I'll go with the same brand fill valve. It says 2009 on it in my handwriting, so I put the valve in 6 years ago.

It's a common issue and a no-brainer to fix it. A toilet is an extremely simple device, and there is only one thing inside the toilet that can make it "moan".
Just replace the ballcock and be done with it.
