gave a buddy of mine some leftover oil to do the oil change on his 4.8 GMC. 2 quarts of royal purple 10W30, 1 quart of Rotella 10W30, 1 quart of GC 0W30, and 2 quarts of Pennzoil Conventional 10w30. is this a safe combination?

For one OCI, OK. As long as he doesn't do it all the time. Mixing across 4 different brands that all have different additive packages can cause unpredictable reactions, and can really affect cold flow properties. But since you're in Louisiana, cold flow probably won't be a problem.
This question I think has been asked a thousand times on BITOG and the answer is the same, all street oils are compatible so go ahead and mix away.
Not surprisingly you'll end up with a 10w30.

To me, I feel A Harman's kinda answer is more appropriate for this forum. People here always split hair for all the subtle chemistry of oils and then when "mix OK?" question comes up, majority of members say YES with passion. very strange to me....

In a pinch, it's fine. I wouldn't make it a habit of running weird oil cocktails for a car's entire life.
I have been running oil cocktails in The Beast for six years, and it still purrs.

Once in a while for an oil change, just to make use of some orphan quarts, it should be okay.

You've still ended up with a 10w30 with a VI under 150.
