gave a buddy of mine some leftover oil to do the oil change on his 4.8 GMC. 2 quarts of royal purple 10W30, 1 quart of Rotella 10W30, 1 quart of GC 0W30, and 2 quarts of PYB 10W30. is this a safe combination?

For one OCI, OK. As long as he doesn't do it all the time. Mixing across 4 different brands that all have different additive packages can cause unpredictable reactions, and can really affect cold flow properties. But since you're in Louisiana, cold flow probably won't be a problem.

This question I think has been asked a thousand times on BITOG and the answer is the same, all street oils are compatible so go ahead and mix away.
Not surprisingly you'll end up with a 10w30.

To me, I feel A Harman's kinda answer is more appropriate for this forum. People here always split hair for all the subtle chemistry of oils and then when "mix OK?" question comes up, majority of members say YES with passion. very strange to me....

In a pinch, it's fine. I wouldn't make it a habit of running weird oil cocktails for a car's entire life.

Once in a while for an oil change, just to make use of some orphan quarts, it should be okay.
I'm with you, though, in that I would not make a regular practice of it, unless the vehicle in question has reached beater status.
Even then, with a little planning, you can usually use matching quarts for an oil change.

alright. we ended up using 4 quarts Castrol GTX 10W30, 1 -1/2 quarts GC 0W30, and a half quart rotella T5 10W30. what viscosity is this? next time will just go with 6 quarts Rotella 10W30.

This was for what vehicle? a 4.8 GMC?

They don't do well with Castrol.

I hope you got the tools to fix it after it breaks down...

lol, just kidding! all in good fun. you're probably fine.

You've still ended up with a 10w30 with a VI under 150.

I would prefer a blend of those two oils to M1's own 0w30 which has a pretty low 166 VI. That blend will have a VI close to 180 with a HTHSV of 3.2cP.
If you want an oil with the same HTHSV as M1 AFE 0w30 then a 2:1 ratio in favour of the 0W-20 will do it with a nice 181 VI.
