"Mixing of oils"

Oh, I just meant when you look at the price of a 1960's BB 'Vette, most other costs pale in comparison.......

I DO agree a 15w40 HDEO is a great option, but the OP mentioned he had easy access to VR-1 20W-50, so that works well, too!

I agree, for that engine, and easy access to VR-1 20W-50... I'd just run that straight in it.

But, on the other hand, if he is still planning on mixing in a weaker 10W-30 with it... would an HDEO 5W-40 maybe protect just the same?

I had been using Shell Rotella 15w40 for a period. A lot of controversy was going around on the forum(Corvette) concerning the amount of zinc the new Rotella has, and its supposely not the same. I know it use to have about 1200 zinc as per their spec. sheet. Since the availability of Valvoline VR1 has popped up in my area, I think I'll go with the VR1 20w-50. My only thinking was the cold start business, but as you guys pointed out above, that won't be an issue unless I was living in the Arctic. Thanks for all the replies.
Desert Nomad,

Well, the controversy is wrong. You can look at UOA's here and it's still pushing 1200+ppm of zinc in the synthetic 5W-40. Last I saw, the 15w40 actually seemed to have more than that on average (around 1300ppm). But use whatever oil makes you happy.

Go through the UOA section and use the search feature for oils you are interested in. UOA's don't lie unless the company makes a mistake.

BTW, I love the way your ride sounds. It sounds like a great ride. I know it's rated 375hp, but in 72 the horsepower ratings changed, and usually dropped the old ratings by 25%. It's really more around 300 horsepower (and NO I'm not knocking it, just a tidbit of knowledge for ya, and you may already know this).

Do you know the specs of the cam (lift and duration at .050"). It may not be as radical as you think. BUT the car is radical, and I don't blame you for wanting the best for this engine. IMO... RTS 5W-40 would be the best for it, but opinions are like [censored] holes... everyone has one. Just gotta find the right [censored] hole... or opinion... I don't know where I'm going with this hahaha :-)

Just the one point I mentioned earlier is that an HDEO will handle fuel dilution better since you don't drive the vehicle much, and you may not hot rod it to get the oil all that hot and burn the gas out. HDEO's are like the god of oils IMO. But again, opinions...

The oil companies have gone to great lengths to develop an additive package that meets the vehicle's requirements. Some of these additives are synergistic, that is the effect of two additives together is greater than the effect of each acting separately. If you add anything to the oil you may upset this balance and prevent the oil from performing to specification.

+1

When I rarely mix I will only mix at most two items with no more than 30% being mixed into the majority, and that there is a difference of one between them. That is, I will mix two different brands as long as the grades are the same, or two different grades as long as the brands are the same. In an emergency I'll add what's available as long as it's SL or SM rated. This is just my preference.
