Mix OEM and aftermarket ATF

Hello,

Got a 2016 Genesis with 55k miles that I just bought. I’ve got a buddy who used to be a transmission tech who is willing to do a drain and fill on the tranny. He wants to do a drain and fill, run it for a while (to hit the torque converter), then do another drain and fill. He recommends I get 12 quarts of ATF for it.

I’ve got 6 quarts of the OEM. I’m wondering if it would be ok to mix OEM and aftermarket (probably Valvoline) in this manner:

Drain factory fill
Fill with 6 quarts aftermarket
Run it for a while to get it up in the TC
Drain aftermarket
Fill 6 quarts OEM

Thoughts?

That's a solid plan. If it was mine I would do three drain-n-fill but drop the pan on the third one to clean the magnets and inspect. By now they are probably fully loaded and not offering much protection.

Interesting you ask, do you not trust your ex transmission tech buddy on this question?
If you don't, why trust him on other advise?
I'd most likely just drain and fill with ATF you have, run it for a year or 10k miles, then drain/fill and replace rest of old ATF via ATF cooler line with say MaxLife ATF. This ATF worked great for me in HyuKia and Hondas for years.

I mean, I would do the 6qts OE first and then finish with the aftermarket.

No it's not that. He didn't say anything about the type. He just said to bring 12 quarts. I'm just wondering which I should get. The OEM is $20 a pop so I'd rather get the valvoline if I can.
