Does anybody know of a problem common to pre-95 DOHC
Mitsubishi engines, where the symptom is an excessive oil consumption and burn-off due to inferior valve guides?

Well, there are issues with Mitsu engine with valve seals. This usually falls in the excess of 100-125k range (indexed lower for severe duty). My 3.0 tended to have zero consumption until about 3000 miles into the OCI (almost from new). It didn't seem to care whether it was synth or dino.

There was some mention on a 3.0 board, in an article about the valve seal replacement, about valve guides "slipping" (as in sinking).

This page tells of some of the problems you may be talking about.

I've got a 1994 Mitsu pickup with the 4G64 4 cyl FI engine, I bought it 4 yrs. ago with 38k orig, has 79k now.
Truck uses a qt. every 1000 miles, doesnt smoke & passes inspection like a champ every yr.
The oil consumption hasnt changed since I've owned the truck...
I've researched this pretty extensivly & post on a " Yahoo groups " website called mitsubishimightymaxtruckclub...{ do a search } Most people { 80 % if not more } report the same high oil consumption issue since new, it's a common thing with these motors.. But this Mitsu is the most dependable vehicle I've ever owned , most will go 250 k miles easy if well maintained & not beaten on, I'm a big fan of these trucks..
Mine's never failed me, except for tune ups, hoses, timing belt ect. I've never had anything go wrong, been replaced nor a hiccup..
Maybe it's because it's often getting a drink of clean oil :) ..
PS , Auto RX did nothing for my oil consumption issue but did quite a lifter tick I had @ start up...

Thank you, thank you.
The engine in question is a 3.0 DOHC in a '92 Mitsubishi Diamante. Heard about the valve guide issue from the same characters that enlightened me regarding the "common Volkswagen problem" (see "Volkswagen motor mounts"). Just wanted to see if this was legitimate, or just another load of BS. This Diamante is actually driven by the former owner of the Passat. I told him he should keep an eye on the motor mounts, make sure the bolts are not backing out.
